all over the place

Some one recently described a minor celeb as cool on here. So i was thinking what is cool ? is it based on looks personality ,enigmatic personality ,magnetism, exclusiveness or what ?

Depends what age group you are asking I guess. Cool for a young person is very different from the definition given by a more mature one.

For me... cool is somebody who is genuinely at ease with themselves. No hang ups, no need to prove anything and no need to try and make anybody else feel inferior.

Why thank you.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I don't know how to describe it but it is something you can recognise in people - even quite young.

I have known two brothers since they were toddlers. The younger brother was always cool. He chose to wear a bracelet with the yin/yang symbol when he was four. He could choose the outfit that made him look fantastic without any artifice or guile. At 7 girls wanted to be his girlfriend (he thought they were all silly). He is still cool in his 20s.

His older brother was a bit nerdy and prickly to be around. He is now a strange man in his 20s that would not do well on here.

I love them both and I can see the good and bad in both of them but one is JUST cool.

"He chose to wear a bracelet with the yin/yang symbol when he was four."

If I'd worn that at my primary school I wouldn't have made it to five.

I'd have been beaten to death in the sandpit with a plastic spade.

I look at my kids and, yes... I am not objective... but they are all very cool in their own way. All have lovely personalities, kindness, humanity and humility. They to me are cool.

"Individuality and style..."

I find that interesting ,But _iew ,what counts as style and does it contribute to cool ,or is it cool....stuff they wore in the 16th ,17th ,18th century etc must of had style ...but now ?

Style is a tough one in coolness ?

it has to be contemporary style ,but then retro is stylish sometimes or is it ?

its almost like coolness is nebulous and you cant quantify it, so then i think why use a word we cant define or explain

yep i agree they are all classed as the typical "cool" persona's but would they be cool if it was johnny depple the car cleaner or brian furry a trout farmer etcetc is it cultivated media hype and if it is .. how does work or fit in to ordinary people who are perceived as Cool.

LL Cool J , Coolio or Rita Coolidge could possibly provide an explanation that would satisfy your inquisitive mind

Who knows

Cool... not a word that is used widely used as a descriptive nowadays. Seen the name Brian Ferry bandied about, tend to agree that the media hyped him up back in the day ...as for now would an older version cut it in the real world.... I think not. As previously mentioned it has a different meaning for different age groups.

The younger age group would tend to go for the celebrity lifestyle kinda thing with the trophy attachments on the arm, excessive bling, and being able to party hard into the daylight hours. In reality it is a lot simpler... someone who doesnt operate in fire fight mode, gets on with whatever is thrown at them and deals with it without letting everyone know, doesnt make a drama out of a crisis, doesnt give it the "lookatme" attitude in everything they do, observes and assesses before taking any definitive action... the description can go on and on

That is exactly my point - everyone wanted to be his friend or for him to pick them to play with. His brother would have been bashed in the sandpit with you if he had worn anything like that.
