'Tis is not an original thought.

Elsewhere on FAB, Alpha males are like Alpha software: so very, very buggy.

Sometimes being first isn't best...premature ejaculation springs to mind.

I think anyone who has to tell you their place on the ladder, isn’t there. To me, the word alpha means a strong leader. The one people look to and rely on. The one that can lead others. But if someone has to describe that to me then I’m already not listening.

I'm not too bothered by someone describing themselves as Alpha. I think you can usually observe who the alphas are male and female.

Interestingly the term alpha on this thread is being interpreted as being male when in fact the alpha title belongs to the female and always will!

Wow … such controversy! Alpha … to me means a leader, a strong respectful personality, sensitive and considerate. A straightforward no BS attitude and an honest opinion. My protector and saviour ( should I ever need it) ….. what is being described by others on this thread is just a dick and an arsehole. (Male or female)

I have suffered a narcissistic relationship, and he was in no way an Alpha male.

A strong willed man or woman isn't going to go around calling thenselves alpha. They just get shit done.

I've know "alpha" sorts, and they tend to be bullying, controlling and indeed very narcissistic. Goes hand in hand with the term.

I too have seen such folk a blathering mess when they are don't get their own way.

I don't like the recent escalation in use of the term narcissist. Personally, I prefer to leave the diagnoses to medical professionals who are qualified in the relevant fields and have detailed knowledge of the person in question.

On here, when men describe themselves as alpha, I generally presume, biased by personal experience, that they've watched Fifty Shades of Shite and are going to try to inappropriately, and without consent, spank and pull the hair of any woman daft enough to fall for their chat up lines.

Best way to test if you are an alpha male and believe you are what every woman wants.

Next time on a first date, walk into the bar with a confident stride, a firm handshake and say "Hi, I'm (complete here if you can remember your name, if not check the label your mum sewed in your underpants), it's your lucky night, I take it you've already guessed I'm an Alpha Male and then make a growling sound.

Let me know how long the night lasts.

I don't think an "Alpha" male would say he is Alpha. Egomaniacs or narcissists may certainly claim to be, but that doesn't make it so.

You can claim to be anything without it being true. However if someone knows themself to possess the qualities of an alpha and says so I don't think that means they have a personality disorder.

Yeah, I see your point, but as you mention, people can claim to be anything they wish, and I've seen a lot of people claim to be "Alpha" but are just playing up to stereotype of what that is. Although I agree and hold my hands up, it was maybe a bit far reaching to describe people like this as personality disorder.

That's a bit of a generalisation in my opinion. I also don't agree that self praise is no recommendation. Why is it a problem to be aware of things about yourself you know or believe to be good and *in the right circumstances* let them be known?

Like many of these threads. The most important missing piece is a shared definition of the term being argued over/Discussed. Its very clear that many people are using many different definitions...some of which are very far from the definition of an alpha male.

It also assumes the profile using the term understands it too. Many words are used in profiles and not all are used accurately per their definition.

Slow down fab funsters!

The OP rather naively linked traits of the so called Alpha pack member to narcissism.

Narcissism is a self-centered personality style characterized as having an excessive interest in one's physical appearance or image and an excessive preoccupation with one's own needs, often at the expense of others.

The two traits can be intertwined but are can exist in separation.

Alpha traits exist in pack animals mainly and are needed to establish the hierarchy and dominate gene line. In the world in which we live there is little need for alpha supremacy as some of are educated and some not.

In the plastic world of recreational sex some may view those who indulge in some forms BDSM as having a dominant role in that setting.

Just an opinion of a simple chap from the north.

I believe that the term was made mainstream (previously just used in animal biology) by a 1970 book on wolf pack behaviour in zoos.

Even the author, David Mech, hasn't stood by his work since 1999

The wolves were not related, and in a confined space. So basically 'prison rules'

Yes nothing wrong with an alpha male per se but something wrong describing yourself as one and shouting it from the rooftops. As others have said red flag for being a dick.

The lion doesn't run around saying it's a lion. Everybody knows.

We feel a bit the same about people who say "I'm a dom" or "I'm a bull". Not always but often a dick flag. Better to say I have experience with x, y or z or enjoy being dominant sexually at times or enjoy playing with couples and taking control etc. And this is based on many years of experience separately and together. Often these people turn out to be dicks in real life.

Narcissism or Alpharism?

Alpha "

The term is largely irrelevant in the human world and is often diluted into assertiveness, organisational and decision making skills. Some are born to lead others happy to follow. Most I have chosen to support recognise the need for the team to succeed and manage the situation and process accordingly.

The most successful person I have chosen to follow was very unassuming very competent sure in in intention and endeavour and empathetic beyond the call. All this was wrapped up in superb communication skills.

However if a reinforcement of the objectives were required you would be told in no uncertain terms what was needed by way of refocusing. If needed this was done in a calm and very direct way.

She was truly an inspirational leader.

There are some great very funny definitions on Urban Dictionary. This a good one

________

In the animal kingdom alpha males are a real thing and usually live an extremely violent existence while they constantly defend their territory and the females of their species that they breed with. In human beings an alpha male is more of a personality type that usually describes somebody who is arrogant, obnoxious, insensitive, selfish, competitive while also being insecure and often resort to physical violence. Alpha male is a term that people use to protect their egos and in order to explain and validate their treatment of other people.

"Why does that guy walk around disrespecting everybody with his chest all puffed up as if he's God's gift to the world?"

"Because he has a little dick, is insecure and is overcompensating. He thinks he's an alpha male"

You may be confusing alpha males with leaders. Not the same thing at all. When I served in the military, their best leaders were considered to be in the top 5% of their officer cadre. I was assessed inside the top 2%. No way am I the stereotypical alpha male.

Just an opinion of a simple chap from the north.

Pretty much what I said, just not so long winded lol

Isn’t the term “alpha” normally only referred to in the animal world and not in humans?

You did say that albeit with a degree of brevity?"

Correct

"Slow down fab funsters!

"What type of person do you want in charge in an emergency situation?

You may be confusing alpha males with leaders. Not the same thing at all. When I served in the military, their best leaders were considered to be in the top 5% of their officer cadre. I was assessed inside the top 2%. No way am I the stereotypical alpha male."

Yeah definitely wouldn't want someone who goes round professing they're an alpha.

As far as 'strong woman' is concered my opinion is that people use different

definitions of words and phrases according to their age, the context they see the word used in and how a word makes them feel. Also some people tend to become defensive if they feel someone is describing themselves in any way that can be deemed even remotely flattering or displaying a strength of any sort. One must be self deprecating at all times which must make writing a CV or attending job interviews a bit of a nightmare if you only have an hour to display your good qualities without actually saying what they are.

I think what's being said on this thread is that there's a certain type of man who is often disliked and he describes himself as alpha. Whether he is or not is another matter.

"I don't think an "Alpha" male would say he is Alpha. Egomaniacs or narcissists may certainly claim to be, but that doesn't make it so.

You can claim to be anything without it being true. However if someone knows themself to possess the qualities of an alpha and says so I don't think that means they have a personality disorder."

But dominant / alpha men in real life never consider this a thing even, it’s only places like this and munches where it’s emulated. It’s like people who declare they are intelligent , they invariably are not. I think it’s best to let’s others make those judgements , why on earth would a smart alpha man or woman need to acknowledge it and tell others - it just is

The "alpha" is possibly defined best as being "top of the pack". Of course that doesn't tell us which pack, nor the attributes to get there.

Imo, our social world is too complex to have a well defined pack. So the term is pretty useless. Even if once upon a time humans did have "alphas". (Genetic studies suggest that c 50pc of males reproduced so I don't think there has ever been a true alpha male the way you get with lions etc)

Often it's used to (try to) denote terms like strong, dominant, etc. Coz women want that ... Right ?

However in many real world (wildlife) cases, the alpha of a pack isn't the strongest but the one who can command a few strongish second in commands. From what I observe, those who claim alpha tend to lack in these skills.

The way I picture it is the self proclaimed alphas are the school bully. For a small group of people, for a small period of time, they do "rule". But in the wider scheme of things they end up being life's losers. They just haven't realised it it....

"Our of interest and at a tangent to the op. How do people like others to describe themselves, given that initially we only have the written word on here?"

And there's the rub.

Met many folks at clubs, socials, parties and holidays and does the real person fit into the description on their profile.

Sadly, not always.

Those confident, good looking, walking sex gods are sometimes social inept, inexperienced, immature men.

Nice guys though, but the initial profile has made them look somewhat delusional and that's a great pity.

Better off being reasonably truthful and escaping the other throngs of single males attempting to be noticed by, quite simply, tipping up to one of the many real meets where your real character can shine and where you don't have to be anything you are not.

Just a suggestion.

So based on that, it could be argued then that there isn't any difference, just peoples individual interpretation as both have many instances of people who are loud, overly confident, arrogant and go through life believing they're number 1...equally there are people who have the more positive traits for each description.

This just feels like yet another in the constant tirade of man bashing threads that are now becoming almost daily in the forum- something that simply wouldn't be tolerated with any other group

Absolutely.

That's why we use the site.

Don't care if you are Alpha or any other description.

What we want is to meet, in real life, friendly, sexy, chatty, easy going folks, who understand what a bar of soap and a toothbrush is for.

Don't care about your political views, your career, your social standing, how much your house is worth, how wonderful your kids are, just a willingness to meet up and sadly for most that's what separates the vast majority.

We are big supporters of single guys, the vast, vast majority who actually meet are FAB, just like the couples and single ladies we meet too, no difference.

We are not looking for new partners, husband or wife, got one, very happy.

Think our verifications show we actually meet.

Agreed it doesn't necessarily but having an over inflated opinion of oneself is a characteristic of narcissism. And running around shouting that "I'm an alpha" is in most cases having an over inflated opinion of oneself. If true you don't need to shout it and most people who are would not.
