What do you think needs to be done to stop offenders re offending??

I don't there is anything that will stop some of them!! When I worked in a prison a guy with Tourette's who used to constantly reoffend as in prison no one judged him but society did - quite sad really as he was a lovely guy!!

people will only stop re-offending when they feel they have something else to live for or if they just decide to by choice.

you also have the ones who will never change because they don't know any other lifestyle.

It took a lot for me to turn my life around and to distance myself from the life style I grew up in but it was worth it

Make them think they have some worth in life, self respect. Get them of the drugs and petty crime, give them a value. Self for filling prophecy. iF people believe your a no hoper thats how you will be, but give them something of interet. Maybe carpentry classes or something to do with hands. Criminals are not all interlets, but some go on to do computer exams. Look at frankie boyle. I think the worst thing they have to do is not fight the system.

I help out in a boxing gym the guy who owns the gym put every penny of his own money into it kids that cant afford to train just get in free to keep them of the streets no help whatsoever hes had...last week local paper came to look round..bang on que the local councillor police mayor every tom di k and harru wants involved to take the lime light...in short nobodys interested unless theres something in it for themselves..these people need help and theirs shelters councilling centres getting shut down every week

Yep, same all over. Huge waiting lists for drug rehab too. When an offender's motivated to change their behaviour, the help needs to be available there and then, not 18 months down the line!

Yes they're often in prison due to alcohol and drug addiction and some folks may view this as being a choice they have made.

Never judged you at all, never mentioned your name. Was actually talking about wider society, not specifically those commenting on this thread.

Don't think either prison or taking the right path are the easy way out. But some folks aren't ready to make that shift in behaviour.

Like everything else in life its an individual path, and it takes some longer than others to find it

Actually I think if anybody has worked with offenders they generally have a sound idea of what is going on for those people. I totally understand the frustrations of those who feel prison is an easy option, I empathise even more with victims of crime. But I also see there is another side to most offenders' cases and very often, once you know what they have gone through you can understand a little better.

My cousin died a few years ago after bein hooked on heroin for 26 years the sad thing is there was a reason he started usin it. He tried to get help many times there were no spaces in the rehab units. People take drugs for many reasons some think its fun some like my cousin started usin to block his pain he was sufferin

In Scotland anything under four years is seen as a short term prison sentence. Most programmes only deal with long term sentences...therefore the opportunity to rehabiliatate the majority of offenders is lost.

When I was younger there was a lad lived up the street to me, he was forever being in borstal then when 18 went to prison, this was on and off over a period of around 4 years, I asked him one day why he kept going to prison his answer was this

"I get out of prison I get a flat in a shitty area thats full of damp, cannot afford anything nice as no one will employ me, The food I eat is shit as I cannot afford good stuff because of my record i cannot get a job, in prison are all my mates, I feel like somebody, I get three hot meals a day and my cell is not damp and cold, I can get an education if I want, but whats the point as no one will employ me"

I will never forget those words as long as I live as I felt sorry for him as he could see no way out, he was not into drugs he was a car theif (not a good one as he kept getting caught, or did he want to get caught??)

His parents where decent enough people, and could have had a good life if he put his mind to it.

I think some of that, which sounds like a cushy life, is designed to help people obtain qualifications they can then use to get bck and stay on the right path. I do understand the frustrations, I really do, and I am not sure what the best solution would be.

Prison doesn't work,and its really only meant to be used to be used for offenders that are assessed as being at high risk of causing harm.

Thats not the case though, and offenders that are low risk are mixing with higher risk criminals. They come out with better ideas for offending and often addiction problems when there was none before.

And surely the medium to long term outcomes have to be considered in this. Society benefits from reformed prisoners rather than from re offenders.
