Wild or Openwater Swimming

I love wild or openwater swimming but suffer from not being able to regulate my body temperature, so I wear a 5 mm suit most of the year.

As the water temp drops I’m struggling more with my temp dropping…

When do you call it a day and stop swimming in the wild ?

Never if my local bay is anything to go by! Regularly see people swimming even when it's snowing up here!

I guess it's different for everyone though.

A friend does this regularly and belongs to an open water swimming group. She hasn’t managed to convince me and never will

In the water for 8 mins but takes 20 to get dry and dressed again! She doesn’t wear a wetsuit!

How long do you swim for ? This is one of the benefits , you get the same results without taking thermogenics. Just stay close the edge (but out of the s) or swim with others and shorter shorter swims. We sometimes swim

Ladybower reservoir in winter , completely naked , your skin burns but for the next 2-3 days you feel amazing , your bodies heater kicks in and you’re glowing , your skin feels amazing and you’re burning fat at a fast pace

Not all that North of North London

One of my friends has the same problem with temperature and stops sea swimming in October/November.

2 other friends swim year round but never with a wetsuit!

Once the negative aspects outweigh the positives, I guess. Seems sensible like...

I love a wild swim, me!

We both prefer open water swimming to pool swimming but given most of our triathlons take place in lakes or the sea then we have to be acclimatised to certain conditions. Deep winter we do revert to the pool but that's because we're both wimps when it comes to anything less than 10 degrees

Do you have decent gloves & socks?

I invested in an upgrade last winter, and they were a real game- changer.

SW Scotland

We do a bit of open water swimming and when it’s cold enough some ice dipping.

Definitely invest in some of the socks/gloves ! That’s all I (mr) use when ice dipping with shorts

Yeah I’m getting to the point where my skin is already burning as I enter the water, even with a 5 mm wetsuit. The pain is becoming hard to bare too.

Ohhhh the joys of CFS.

Plenty in the rivers and river fed lakes

Just the water table is so low it doesn’t get to the reservoirs
