Any advice on soothing a uti?

I've not had one since I was a teenager but I have woken up today in agony. And to top it all off I have a possible 24 hour wait for my antibiotics.

I can barely stand up it is so uncomfortable. I'm drinking loads of water but it doesn't seem to be doing much and I can't find any relief. I'm burning and stinging with a constant urge to wee.

So is there anyone here who is willing to share some helpful tips?

Use a heating pad in the lower abdomen area, some paracetamol and there are some OTC sachets that help whilst antibiotics are doing their thing.

Hope you get better soon

.

Hot water bottle.

Don't drink caffeine, cut it out.

Lots of unsweetened cranberry juice. Actual juice, not from concentrate.

Take Vitamin C tablets.

Eat lots of yogurts, kefir ones in particular.

Above won't cure it but will help alleviate some of the symptoms. Hope you're able to get antibiotics soon and are on the road to pain free peeing Lemmy x

I think cranberry is the best cure, the sachet stuff from the pharmacy not the sugary juice

"Boots online doctor pick up antibiotics same day"

Any online or telephone doctor will give you a prescription instantly , Boots consultations are pricey - I use teladocs , they even check which chemist has it in stock and send it direct to them

Some pharmacies now provide same day prescriptions for certain common ailments without needing to see a Dr first. I did this when I had a water infection back in April.

Well they do in Wales, not sure about elsewhere. Feel better soon lovely.

Thank you for the replies everyone.

I'm waiting for my partner to come home from work and I'll ask him to pop to the chemist and shop and have a look for some sachets and yoghurt.

I used Superdrug doctors online. I regret it now. I might see if I can cancel and find a place that sends prescription the same day because it feels like someone is stabbing my insides and I'm not sure I'll make it until tomorrow.

I'll have a look for a hot water bottle now!!

If you've got any bicarbonate of soda drink half a teaspoon in water if you can bear it. It reduces the acid and lessens the sting. I'm going to buck the trend and say don't touch cranberry, there's no proof it's effective and can make things worse.

Paracetamol, hot water bottle, bicarb and rest. (The over the counter sachets are basically bicarb with added sugar).

I've drank bicarb for one and it helped.

Don't drink cranberry or any other acidic juice. No tea or coffee either.

You can smear lots of natural yoghurt on a tampon then insert it

If your symptoms don't get better after a few days ring a GP. If you leave it too long it can become a kidney infection.

Get the Canesten Cystitis powders or similar.

Drink liquid until you think you will die

Put cold yoghurt on your foof to calm it a little but DO remember that the infection is in your bladder....

I never wait to wash it away as it just gets worse in my case.

I always get a script for an antibiotic while i'm taking home measures.

Could already have turned into a kidney infection. When I got to my GP a few years back they told me I was 24 hrs away from needing to be hospitalised had I not seen the doc when I did.

But defo get a gp appointment or send in a sample in the meantime.

I ended up hospitalised with a kidney infection because it was badly managed…. I was very close to being seriously seriously ill. I had more drips in me than I care to remember. If you start being sick - straight to a&e no messing.

And yes I am trying to scare you x

Why? Most uti do clear with antibiotics. Hospitalisation is rare

Unfortunately not as rare as one may think, a lot of UTI end up being poorly managed and resulting in Kidney infections

Try teatree and witch hazel in a shallow bath to ease the discomfort and inflammation etc.

Boots have a range that is excellent but lots of places stock it.

It seems everyone else has hit the nail on the head, but just to add some other points from a man that's never had one...

Hot sauce, put it on everything, drink loads of fizzy crap drinks, think lucozade, full fat , cherryade. Fill yourself with acid, sugar and e numbers. Go weeeeeee while you wee?

Squats, endless squats.

Oh and arrange a couple of meets, I'm sure that'll make you feel better too.

Helping? Welcome.

Some chemists have a prescribing pharmacist can you not find one in your area. I really feel for you I hate them. I end up spending hours in the bath to ease it I’ve not found anything that actually works but antibiotics x

I got a kidney infection from a UTI caused by someone showing me a new trick he saw on a video. Ended up very ill and needing 6 weeks worth of antibiotics.

The urethra is a delicate area and should be treated accordingly.

Phone your GP or go to your local walk in centre, they'll give you a prescription right away or send it to your pharmacy if it's a phone consultation

I was thinking that there must be more natural remedies, women have had dodgy water works for thousands of years before anti biotics, surely they didn't all die of organ failures as a result?

What does our pal Google suggest?

Even if you do get anti biotics today they have an accumulative effect so you'll need something to take the edge off til then. Suggestions other than gallons of fizzy drinks seem very sensible.

Because of the whole antibiotics thing atm they sometimes are reluctant to prescribe a broadspectrum one and will insist on sending a sample away first to be sure they give you the correct one for what ails you.

Good luck, hoping they don't keep you waiting too long

"I think cranberry is the best cure, the sachet stuff from the pharmacy not the sugary juice

Google comes back with the same - cranberry pills and something called D-mannose that you can get on Amazon delivery would be tomorrow if you have prime.

Consider taking D-mannose.

Most people have never heard of D-mannose, but it’s a chemical compound similar to glucose that research has shown may help treat or prevent UTIs. “It’s like a sugar so the bacteria attach to that instead of the walls of the urethra and vagina,” says Dr. Eilber. “A lot of people will take D-mannose and report to me that it can have really good preventive effects for them.”

If you do make a home made hot water bottle from a normal plastic bottle please remember to wrap it in a tea towel or a t-shirt to lower the risk of burns should you fill it from a very hot water source and it increases the usability time as the heat takes longer to transfer out.

Ah you're all so amazing!

I've drank about 4 litres of water and pain is starting to ease off now. I've got a little hot teddy thing too which is nice but not sure it is doing anything but keeping my vag warm.

I used to get these constantly as a teenager and I've had a couple of kidney infections so don't worry I'll probably know if I get another one.

Prescription should be ready this afternoon which is good news. I'll ask my partner to pick up a few sachets too when he's there.

I'm just praying this isn't the start of them returning all the time. I feel so fortunate to not have had them for 10 years.

Thanks everyone. Xx

If you can get an appointment speak to your gp. One thing I've noticed is that I often get a run of them. Depending on how understanding and flexible they are you might be able to fast track antibiotics via them next time.

Hope it clears asap.
