North West

Go to an independent mortgage broker who can access the whole market, not one in a specific bank/building society or estate agency. That's your best method for getting the best rate. Rates aren't great now compared to a week ago, though.

That really depends on so many factors. Area, income, house prices etc.

I was listening to R4 today with some people saying their repayments have increased by £500 to £600 a month

Later I was sorting through paperwork and found a letter from the mid nineties from our building society telling us our interest rate would revert to 8.5% as our fixed rate was finishing.

I’d always say independent broker, never ‘the bank’ far more chance, ours is amazing and always gets deals that you don’t see online

Not yet it's not. Not here at least.

Brighton - even Hove!

Interest rates are getting higher but 6% is nothing. Used to be 15% at least. I’d do a fixed deal for as long as you can get.

I think a little time is needed, for the market to settle down. You'll then be able to see what the options are and to be able to take your decision based on that reality, that we're currently unaware of.

Brokers will have rates that high street lenders don't offer directly and vice versa.

If you want to cover all the bases you need to do a bit of leg work.

So go to a variety of brokers and go online to comparison sites and go on individual lender's sites.

They distribute rates to different channels based on the traffic they have and where needs pushed.

Don't get caught out by fees/non fees as the difference in rate will usually even things out and often a lender allows you to add the fee in to the amount borrowed. All things to ask an adviser and you can have them work out comparisons of amount repaid to see if there's a benefit either way

Titz Towers, North Notts

This country could do with more housing. When Thatcher sold the council houses off in the 80s, the income wasn't used to build more houses, just to cut down on the cost to people of the rates.

I'd hate to be trying to get a mortgage here now ,so much red tape with people that you have no choice but to dance to their tune , tbh l hate so many things with so many people regards a mortgage now , it could cost you a serious amount of money before you can build or have a house now , whatever about buying an existing property building one nowadays is a serious financial undertaking.

Remortgaging is going to be easier than getting a new one, but it won’t be impossible. A broker will be best placed to give you the advice for the product your looking for, and on the feasibility of any application as determined by your individual circumstances.

How do you propose living somewhere without paying rent, unless it's a tent ?

Tbh I'd not be tenting as a lifestyle choice myself. A few days away in a tent as a holiday is plenty.

Certainly not suited to later years or poor health.

Each to their own

Look at getting a mobile home, bit cheaper than a house. Plus when you get bored of the area, it is easier to move.

I gave up and decided to wait out the storm. Bank withdrew my offer at 1.6% and hiked it up to 6%, told them to sod off.

Soul crushing right now? Absolutely.

Not necessarily!! Research is needed as different sites have different rules as we found out when my aunt was looking
