I feel like a lot of people who aren't into current, mainstream stuff often announce this with such an air of superiority (also often without being asked). This, or they say that they've never heard of something well-known in a way where they attempt to denounce it, as if they're above it.

Why is this? Why do some people think they are better than the many they don't share the same tastes with? Can they not just let people live their happy little lives watching Game of Thrones and listening to Drake?

Personally I don't follow any particular trend.

I do research on almost every largeish purchase.

I buy what I think is best for the money and reliability.

I watch stuff I know I will like.

If any of them happen to be popular or unpopular so be it I couldn't care less.

That said I would never watch love island.

I can quite happily say also that I've never seen a single episode of the Simpsons, Strictly, I'm a celeb, BGT, X-factor or any similar shows. I don't announce it until someone starts mocking people who don't watch those programmes.

It's like discussions over the joys of alcohol when some are dismissive of those of us who are teetotal. I've been told I'm not a real man because I don't drink so obviously I'm proud of the fact I don't need that crutch and I'll defend my choices.

I can get behind watching something and then deciding that you don’t want to see any more of it. But if you have, literally, never watched any of those programmes how can you know how you feel about them.

I've never been invested in animation of any type so it's not a genre I would even think about watching.

I've never watched any of the other programmes because I don't buy into the whole celeb culture and the whole idea of something like BGT and x factor just reminds me of all those crappy talent shows in the local youth club with a little more glitch and glamour so once again not something I'm interested in.

Totally mainstream, And I was indeed one of the refuseniks because I'd read the books and thought it would be crap, so I didn't actually watch it until a month or so ago when I did all 8 series in a few weeks.

I guess, everything either thinks they are, or that they was to be, special - or at least different - to everyone else. And so for some, it's a way to demonstrate that difference - oh yeah you like GoT? Well, I prefer (insert random similar thing that's more niche here)...

So yeah, I've been guilty of not liking something because it's popular, in music film tv books and indeed people on Fab, we probably all have, but I wouldn't;t like to call it a defining feature of my personality, as there's many more examples of where I have gone with the herd, and by definition, you won't really notice that...

I haven't watched many of them..... Most seem to be hosted by ant and Dec or paddy mcguiness So I don't need to watch any of them to know its highly unlikely I will like them.

I've never been one to follow popular trends.

As already said above I don't drink and never have done in spite of peer pressure. The same is true of smoking which I never tried simply because all my mates were into it.

I follow a different football team to all my friends.

There are lots of TV shows that I have watched years after they were trending such as Breaking Bad and the Sopranos. I binged them and enjoyed them but I have no interest in going back to watch them again.

I don't buy popular clothing brands mainly because I can't afford them but also because like all the examples above I like to do my own thing.

That's how I treat fab as well and don't follow the herd.

There are a lot of people both here and irl who are quick to say how they like to be different and unique but they all dress alike, watch the same shows, go to the same bars and concerts and are basically all clones.

If I say I don't do something or don't follow something is because I'm genuinely proud of the fact that I am not doing things just because others are and it's never about dismissing anyone elses preferences.

I see it A LOT on these forums. Someone will start a thread about something and inevitably you will get one or two people going "why on earth would anyone watch/listen to that?". Or "never heard of it" when it's clearly something people are passionate about or really like (I don't see how that's in any way constructive. Why not just ask what something is instead?).

Bonus points if it's someone older lecturing someone younger about how much better something was in their day, and they wouldn't know real XYZ if it hit them in the face.

I work with people 30 years younger than myself so I do spend a lot of time going “who’s that” “what’s that” or “ never heard of them”

Got you. I've seen it, I've even done that too (inadvertently). A lot of the time when this sort of thing happens I like to think of us all being say at a Christmas do with the office, you're there with a bunch of people you have a vague link to, but you won't like to get on with them all, but you're all in the same room and someone will always be contrary about something. It doesn't always mean that they are killjoys, but sometimes they just want to pipe in with something and they've got nothing better. Often it's innocent enough. There was a thread the other day here about saving money by purchasing out of date beer. I replied with "Or don't buy beer", which was a super lazy comment that if I wasn't;t multitasking with some other stuff I would have tried to make funnier in some way (in a let them eat cake way), but I didn't, and by the time I thought to myself that's a shit answer it was too late to delete and I'd already had a well deserved ding for it being shit. But yeah, some do take pleasure from being miserable pillocks, and just disagreeing with a given position without offering a more positive alternative. The mobile phone threads are good for this, full of people telling others their phone is shit - why!?!?

I don't watch television very often because I find most of it boring and repetitive.

When I see people on Facebook post reactions to something that happened in a soap opera like Eastenders or Coronation Street it's like they think it's reality.

That does mean I can't have conversations about current programs, but it isn't snobbery on my part; I just like different things to the general public.

I think that's pretty much it. Also, people feel a sense of pride in being one of the first to like something so if they come into it late, it's easier to denounce it than to be seen as "jumping on the bandwagon"

I'm one of those. I hope I don't say it with any snobbery.

Two reasons, I have seen 10 minutes of Love island and Strictly etc and that kind of thing doesn't appeal to me. All the false build up while waiting for a result etc, does my head in.

Sometimes also it feels like sheep following everyone else when theses programs are on. You're made to feel like you're missing out on something.

I like films, drama and comedy but feel I can make better use of my time than watching EastEnders etc.

For my age group it's probably watching Eastenders of an evening, reading the latest biography on Richard and Judys book review and making some shit from Keith Floyd cook book (because he's retro chic).

I dont watch terestrial TV, because Netflix, Prime and Disney are awesome, I read fantasy and graphic novels and and I only cook sweet things, because I bloody well can. If the mouth breathers don't like it, they can suck my duck!

Wasn’t it that there’s not always a need to announce that you don’t like or know something (esp when you’ve no interest in finding out or learning about it) with a sense of superiority?

Also people can dislike things that are mainstream or popular but not liking them whether or not done for image, does not make you cool.

This isn’t to say these things apply to you but I think they were an observation of the OP.

And I could be wrong here too but that’s howo read it.

No one's trying to tell anyone the reason why they don't like something. Everyone has different tastes; I don't give a shit what people like or not.

It's when I see SOME people try to make others feel beneath them for having certain tastes, without provocation. It happens a lot on the forums, and I now know I'm not the only one who sees it.

Couldn't comment on Drake because I've no idea whether I've ever heard him/her/them. I generally find something of value in most types of music, but then I listen to a hell of a lot of different stuff. I guess that now they've been brought to my notice I might see if I can find them on youtube or somewhere.

If someone wants to listen/watch/read/do different things to me, well why not? The world would be boring if we all had the same tastes.

I didn’t see what all the fuss was about with them thinks you’d clip to bicycle wheels that made a noise when you where giving it big licks on ya BMX no way was I pimping my Raleigh Burner up to keep in with the rest of the BMX bandits although I did clip them plastic clips of the bread to my break cables was an 80s thing

No one's trying to tell anyone the reason why they don't like something. Everyone has different tastes; I don't give a shit what people like or not.
