Newry Down

The greatest sitcom that has ever been broadcast, namely:

The Phil Silvers Show, aka Sergeant Bilko, aka You'll never get rich.

Devised by a comic genius called Nat Hiken, it was broadcast in the mid-1950s and it is still being broadcast today.

The most famous episode is the one where a chimpanzee is inducted into the US Army.

The comedy is of its time, now dated, but revered in comedy circles to this day

Many of the episodes are still available.

Unusually the show was filmed in New York, not in Hollywood California, and before a live audience.

Phil Silvers, who plays the scammer/conman is a sergeant in the US Army in Fort Baxter and he is a master manipulator, to his own advantage of course.

Most fabbers will never have heard of Bilko, but on several occasions it has been voted the greatest comedy show, EVER

That's a fantastic show. Try Car 54 Where are you? That's written by Nat Hiken, too and it's also great.

All of the actors from Bilko did voiceovers from Topcat, but I doubt that the younger fabbers have seen a complete show; it is decades since repeats were broadcast on the BBC; I watch it periodically on boxsets that were issued to commemorate the 50th and 60th anniversaries of the original US broadcasts from 1955 and 1956.

The most famous voice on the TopCat cartoons was Maurice Gosfield from the original Bilko, but he died, from a heart attack, in his fifties (53) many decades ago.

The two principal actors from Car 54, Where are you? were also in The Munsters along with the stunning Yvonne Carlo.

If you listen very carefully to the theme tune of Car 54, it actually mentions the original name of New York's main airport, Idlewild, before it became JFK, after his assassination in November 1963.

Nat Hiken, a brilliant writer, promised himself that the TV companies would not work him to death; they did. He died from overwork, tragically young!
