For one day a week at the office, and for five days, how far would you travel?

Hour:

Miles:

Curious to hear other people's opinions

I once had a 2 hour 80 mile each way commute over the pennines every day. I hated it, but I learned how to be a master of traversing the Cat and Fiddle road very, very rapidly...

Dubai & Nottingham

I used to travel Notts to Cambridge daily 200 daily round trip, 86 minutes in the morning, anything up to 3 hours in the evening. Did it for 3 years to get the experience I needed to work for my current company

It really depends on the terms and conditions. If they're right, then I'll travel

Pershore

I once worked a 70 minute drive away and felt the 60 min mark was the absolute maximum for driving.

I work for a Danish company and have to go to the head office in Denmark most weeks for a day or two, last week I was in Denmark for 3 days, next week I will be in Hamburg for 2 days. I spend a lot of time travelling round the world, but when you’re marching you’re not fighting as they say!

BRIDPORT

I don’t think I’ve ever had a work base more than 10 minutes away.

Sometimes have to travel a little once at work but rarely more than 15 miles.

I spent 2 or 3 months commuting from London to Paris for 2 days a week, the rest of the working week was in the London office.

Went out on the train leaving Waterloo (at that time) at about 7am and got the 5pm (ish) train back the following day.

It was a hard time but someone had to do it.

?

My current office is 102 miles door to door, but I only have to go in once or twice a month, thankfully.

If I had to go in once a week I'd try not to travel for more than an hour.

^^ This.

I travel to conferences once or twice a year. Other than that, my preference these days is to travel not much further than from my kitchen to my study.

Worthing

One day a week 1.5 hrs on train there and back. London meetings.

5 days a week 45 mins to 1hr there and back. About 50 miles in total. Did that for 13.5 years.

Glad I no longer do the above.

I currently drive 45 mins each way, 4 times a week and that’s too much. Especially when you get the call your bambino is ill and you have to try and get back asap to collect them - seems to take FOREVER

I used to travel from Hull to Bristol one day, then on to Barry and stay over, then Burton and stay over, then York, Home and York on a Friday. It was a right fucking pain

I’m lucky that I have a 20 minute commute. So happy to be in the office three times a week or so.

Of it was longer then I’d definitely work from home more. Too much though I get get distracted on fab… oh wait.

Now there are a lot of hybrid working jobs I tend to look at total driving per week or per month.

Nearest city to us was 40-70 minutes (40miles) each way, this was a comfortable maximum for every day commute (didn't even think about it pre-locdown).

So for a hybrid job if it was a day a week in the office then a 2+ hour each way commute would see me no less worse off. And if it was twice a month in the office then pretty much anywhere in the country including self funded hotel room would still be ok.

The reason I suggest such long distances is because it really opens up the job market so you aren't limited to jobs and pay bands in your area and could do that dream job without moving house, or get the dream house without moving jobs.

If hybrid working is available then it opens up a world of freedom beyond just more time in your PJ's at home.

I see a lot of really tempting jobs advertised as hybrid now, which means the search radius can go from 50 miles to 250. Our company has recruited people all over the country since covid, for this very reason.

Small disclaimer: I used to work away from home in hotels an awful lot, so I don't really think twice about the disruption of a long drive or overnighting in a hotel. I also feel the need to be around other people in an office, but twice a month is enough to scratch that itch.

I used to essentially commute to Switzerland every week for about 6 months. 4am wakeup Monday and back at midnight Friday. Actually got used to it.

Now after two years of working from home I don't think I could handle a daily commute. Maybe a job where I could wfh 4 days a week.

I'd say no more than a 30min drive.
