My ex husband .

Glad I’m free from him but feel for my daughter putting up with him.

At 12 years old she’s starting to see it.

I’m not saying a word or getting involved , but says a lot when she didn’t see him for 2 weeks, and then called me to demand to be collected within an hour .

I heard it when he called me when he brought her back , the attempt to make out he was perfect and she was imagining it . She was literally screaming ‘ stop lying and take me home ‘

As I'm not a psychiatric this is purely conjecture, but there are probably three people I've met in my life who I genuinely believe to be at the deeper end of the narcissist spectrum - one seriously enough affected to warrant assessing for a personality disorder, but with this country's dire mental health provision, almost certainly never going to happen.

I don't think I've met a full blown narcissist. A few people who do seem to talk about themselves and bring conversations back to them. But I'm not sure if that's just narcissistic tendencies or them trying to understand the topics by providing their experiences. Either way, I'm definitely not qualified enough to call them a full blown narcissist.

I do this, but I think it's a neurodivergent thing - I think many of us are more self-referential (not quite the same as self-absorbed) in how we perceive the world. And talking about our own experiences is our way of showing understanding and/or empathy.

Fuck, I've done it again

Haha I think you're right though, a lot of people do rely on their own experience to participate in conversations. I even worry about doing it in messages on here as I never want to make it seem like I'm only talking about myself so I try to ask them questions so they can talk about themselves too. See what I did there?

Need to remember there's a difference between the common idea of narcissism of being a little too in love with yourself, and Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

NPD is the stuff of nightmares and Hitchcock-like torturous abuse.

We all have a bit of the first, it's just human nature.

The second I would not wish on anyone

to anyone reading this who is living it or escaped it. I'm near my 1yr anniversary away from it and I actually think I'm going to have a party

Like most aspects of human personality, traits exist on a continuum, so it's possible for many to have characteristics, without being a full narcissistic personality. Certainly, if another is manipulative and not supportive of your needs, you don't need to know their DSM assessment profile. I knew the odd 1 in real life and steer clear. In fab, I'd do the same, alongside anyone who's not healthy to be with.

The need for admiration is one big difference. You can be extremely confident , successful and not liked by everyone , but don’t really care that much about the views of people who don’t matter. That isn’t narcissistic, but the need for admiration often displayed here is
