It's like a pen thing with a light and camera on it and a silicone scoop shaped tip. You connect it to your phone via wifi and scoop the wax out and see what you're doing on the screen. If there's wax too close to the eardrum I'll use drops to soften it for a while and then it works its way up the ear canal enough to get it easily and safely with the smartbud.

Wow Sounds like a mini mining expedition - actually appeals to the engineer in me

I've got a funny rubber bulby thing that kinda douches the ear canal and washes the rather gross but big lumps out.

But wow we must be bored to be discussing ear wax

As someone who works in this area, only let a professional do it, they have no benefits and the risk of damage isn't worth it, the amount of impacted wax we see from home attempts at removal is nuts

I had tried that but it didn't really work for me. I ended up with ears clogged with both wax and water and it made me kinda dizzy.

It's not funded in most areas, you're very lucky if you get it via the NHS now as it's seen as cosmetic for some bizarre reason

How do you get professional attention when the NHS refuses to fund it in your area? Not everyone can afford £60+ to go to a private clinic.

A very very long wait unfortunately, they will do it but only as a last resort as they prefer not to, it's one part of my job I hate triaging patients and seeing the distress it can cause knowing private is just out of their financial capacity

My son was almost totally deaf with wax and had to go back twice to the private clinic because it was so bad. His GP simply told him (a student at the time) to find his own private clinic. Didn't even suggest NHS triage was an option. We paid for it on his behalf because his hearing is so important as a musician.

I work in the private sector, and I see patients on a daily basis in this position, trust me a lot of us wish we could do it for free but our hands are tied by HO. All we advise is to keep going back and hope they do something for them. I totally get peoples frustration at the cuts to this as it may seek trivial to the NHS but it can seriously impact someone's life.

Reminds me of the locum I had the displeasure of meeting at my doctors surgery. I’d gone in with blocked up ears and he opened up a little case (sharkskin) with a crochet needle in it. I said “woahh where are you going with that” and he said “don’t worry I’ve done hundreds of ears” my response was “ever done your own?” He said “no” so I said “well you can fuck off then”

He marched me out to reception and said to the pharmacist “give mr…… whatever he wants, he has refused treatment “

Ahhh Devon, bailer cord and brute force solves all

I don't use them often mind you. They say use them weekly, but it just seems a waste. Generally week to week I use olive oil drops/spray.

Ear candling (especially at home) is dangerous and totally ineffective.

Make no difference to ear wax and before anyone says I'm wring I work in the NHS and have seen the burns and damage they can do.

The only safe way to remove wax is to use drops and or let a professional do it on the correct way.

Weekly olive oil drops help with wax build up and not poking around in your ears as this will only push back anything that's migrated to the outer canal and impact it
