When people say this I think it’s really respect the customs and traditions around death not specifically the dead person.

I think it is to show empathy with their living loved ones.

Yes that’s true. When you arrange a funeral this is really important that loved ones are allowed to mourn and remember in a dignified way even if you or the dead person just wanted a piss up and sine comedy etc. it can come across as disrespectful

"I think it is to show empathy with their living loved ones."

So right but so many do not understand empathy. Someone said to me in my local today I bet your a bundle of laughs on Christmas Day.

I just said I dont do Christmas because last year on Dec 23rd I held my wife's funeral.

His reply, well life goes on. I felt like hitting him, so ju7st walked out

Surely you respect the dead as they are no longer around to defend themselves against any slight you may raise against them?

East Sussex

theory suggests that in prehistory they venerated their ancestors, keeping their bones, keeping their burials in sight at all times etc. Speaking ill of them or disrespecting them brought 'bad luck'. Old habits die hard

I find it hypocritical. It is arguably true that we should acknowledge the dead cannot defend themselves. However, being dead isn't any kind of justification for being a twat during your life. I dislike the way we automatically accord certain groups of people special status. Being dead doesn't make you special.

This, and showing respect for those mourning.

And we all know, you can still love a family member even if you didn't like them.

Relationships aren't simple, you can grieve for what you never had.

It's a minefield

If I didn't respect them in life, they have no chance in death.

I look at the things that they have done especially since the First World War when people gave their lives so that we have the lives we do ? Not just military but others who have dedicated their lives to help others which covers family members doing everything for their family

So yes respect for them

I respect people who have earned it, dead or alive, just because someone died doesn’t mean my view of them has changed.

"Whilst growing up I was always told this . "

I personally find the whole concept of showing your respects to a corpse slightly bizarre, they are totally unaware of anything that anyone does or doesn't do.

Really what we do is show respect to the loved ones and their memories of the deceased.
