Right dont care how wimpy it sound's. Going to Italy on Wednesday and nervous of the flight.

To be clear used to fly loads when I was younger on family holidays and never had an issue.

This is my first flight in over 15 years and feeling a tad uneasy!

The Town by The Cross

Ah ..... I thought you mean the novel by Erica Jong...

I don't like flying. I pretend I am doing other things and I pretend not to be scared.

Still hate it though.

It's irrational as it's safer then driving.

Likewise.

I just sit and bear it. I try and think of the positives such as what I will do when I get to my destination.

Put some music on and those noise cancelling headphones.

Take your favorite sweets or snacks on board.

I flew to New York and Hong Kong several times...those were long flights.

Italy is about 2hrs?

Have a safe journey..

Like any irrational fear…it’ll be fine for most and they won’t understand it.

I tolerate flying and I’m actually not that bothered most of the journey, it’s more the thought of flying that is worse…

Every now and again I’ll get a stomach drop but I just think of how many flights that are happening at the same time and how many accidents that occur and it’s makes me feel less irrational.

"Stasticly speaking flying is safer than driving "

Not flying is also statistically safer than flying!

It's definitely the crashing that worries me more than the actual flying. Flying is basically just brute force and aerodynamics. Crashing is a lot more complicated.

One thing to remember though whilst we're on the subject of statistics is that the odds on a pilot who has really badly crashed a commercial plane into a mountain or forest or the sea or wherever flying the plane you'll be on, are pretty small.

Every cloud......

Sorry you have had so many sarcastic replies.

What is it specifically that makes you frightened of flying?

In my experience if you tell the ground staff you are very nervous they will answer any questions you might have and be very helpful and compassionate. Have a think as to whether you think it will be better for you to board 1st or last and ask For help if you would like to board 1st. Maybe think of some strategies to help you cope with the anxiety at the airport and on the plane. I hope you have a safe relaxed and enjoyable flight.

Every time I board a plane my thoughts go straight to the maintainers. Were they paying attention while doing their jobs or were they scrolling facebook, snapchat or whichever social media on a phone and missing a vital step in a procedure? I then think of their ages and experience.

Once seated, my legs start their nervous bouncing which is usually noticed quickly by an attendant. After that it is alcoholic drinks in the sky to the point where I just fall asleep.

Next thing I know I am on the ground and waiting in baggage claim.

I try to take something I enjoy to watch or listen to. Then if I feel like I am not at ease or worried I check on the cabin crew. So if there is bad turbulence or a noise I think I don't like or understand, I look around and see what the cabin crew are doing, if they are just doing their thing then it helps to reassure me that everything is as it should be.

Also, and this sounds counter productive but it helps me. I watch YouTube clips of planes landing in difficult weather. I think it helps with assurance that these machines are incredible, are safe and the engineering that goes into them is amazing.

I flew back to the UK during Storm Eunice in February, I couldn't take my eyes off of big jet TV before I took off. As it happens the flight was very good and lucky I missed the brunt of it.

One last thing I do is tell myself, this is just their jobs. Like you and I and everyone else on the flight, they are going to work. Nothing has happened to me at work outside of the odd papercut.

My late father was a pilot in WW2 and always used to say flying is totally safe it is the crashing that is dangerous, he only had to survive one crash.

The modern airplanes are so much more comfortable..there's plenty of choice in entertainment...sit back..relax ..enjoy the experience ..you'll be there in no time

I was 40 before I took my first flight due to fear, a pilot talked me through every bump n grind of the journey and after that I adopted a fatalistic approach, once I'm up there its all out of my control. Love flying now

Kalms or Bach rescue remedy, I always take a physical magazine to block out the window and focus on that rather than the take off and landing which are worst bits for me hope it goes ok for you
