I think sex is fun. But fun for me is, I agree, not what I would use to describe sex. Playing and fun are words I also regularly use to describe activities or feelings children experience and using it to describe sex just feels very wrong

For me as well, the idea that sex is penetrative is deeply problematic and heteronormative. Sex DOES encompass all of the things that we’re describing here. Better than words like ‘fun’ and ‘play’ that are so regularly used in our interactions with children and young people. It’s giving secondary school.

For example, people are afraid to say that they did something sexual or for sexual pleasure and call it sex. Bro- that is more sex than playing.

I know that when mine were younger and if I was in mum mode, sex was not on my horizon as I talked about the kids playing. And vice versa, if I'm sexting or planning to kink it up with anyone, my kids are not on my mind.

It’s all sex? Why wouldn’t it be? Just because there might not be penetration? It’s all part of sex and at the least in the contexts we’re discussing, it’s a sexual act - so I might say we were doing sexual things (can even say ‘with…’) or if I wanted to say kinky I’d say kinky things.

To me, sex being a teen about penetration feels very heteronormative. And so sex doesn’t have to just have such a rigid definition and it can encompass lots of the things people describe - the penetration often comes along but it doesn’t have to. That’s my take but really, honestly, it’s ntd.
