Just been loaned an EV for a few days to test drive. e2008 model

Quite a nice car , very nippy and smooth.

Shocked at what they cost, I think the one I have is about 35k.

Dont do many miles so cant justify getting one.

Will stick with my diesel. Might consider a hybrid though.

If you’re not ready for the move to full electric, hybrids (plug-in) are definitely a good way to dip your toes in.

Prices will have to vote down before people start considering them. An equivalent e-car to what people may have in electric or petrol or diesel is far too expensive. Other little compromises I am sure can be overcome but most people will not pay those high prices at the moment until they come down considerably.

A hybrid might be good. But sitting at a motorway services for 4-6 hours, for the batteries to re-charge is not really on my fun list of things to do.

I know I can add a small amount of charge. (35 mins gives me 100 miles.)

But thinking if batteries are continually part charged. This process will shorten their lives and I will be looking at (currently) a huge amount to replace the batteries.

those numbers look a little off. I can add maybe 220 miles with 40 mins charging at the service.

That's a guess as I've never had to because I've never done more than 300 miles straught in a journey.

However when I do long journies, it's probably good for me to take a 30 min break (my bladder thinks so too!)

So you if likely not begrudge it.

There's also a consideration of overall time spent in the services. I've had mine for maybe six months now. I do over 1k miles a month. I've spent no time waiting for it to be charged. Closest I've had to being "inconvenienced" was giving the dog an extra walk as I needed a top up.

I started with hybrid then switched to ev. Even with higher electricity costs its still around a third of the cost of fueling my hybrid. I also lease my cars so the overall cost of running it for 3 years is lower.

Unfortunately whilst I actually love EVs as a driver (who doesn't want instant torque) I do not see how they can be made practical when the ban on ICE cars comes in 2030.

The charging times are poor, but that can probably be worked around for most people.

The battery lifespan is a concern, as is the impact of their end of life handling on the environment. But again, probably not completely insurmountable.

The problem is that between vehicles, industry and consumer electronics we are placing all of our eggs into one basket with finite availability - Lithium.

When all cars are electric because of government dictat there simply won't be enough lithium to go around, that which is available will increasingly come from sources of questionable strategic alliance, and prices will unavoidably soar.

There may be some savings to be made on the cars themselves over time as R&D costs taper and economies of scale become more effective, but the price of EVs isn't coming down any time soon due to lithium. Maybe a temporary drop before we ramp up to full adoption, but not sustainable.

This isn't a bug in the plan, it's a feature. The purpose of banning ICE cars is little to do with the environment and more to do with ensuring that in the future the plebs don't have personal freedoms to travel.

Noone earning less than the equivalent of £50,000 today at a minimum will have access to personal transportation in a couple of decades. Sad really

There was an article on MSN the other day highlighting the fact that the are likely to be more expensive to run than diesels because of the latest energy price increases. Also until they get the battery range to 600 miles I'll be leaving them on the she shelves and sticking with the cars I've got.

In the full EVs I have been in I generally find the ride quite jarring.

Acceleration is quite sharp compared to combustion engines. This can make me feel travel sick. I don't normally suffer with it odd lol

I have an ev and have found the charging network in general to be awful. Broken chargers, inaccessible chargers (vast majority of chargers are not able to be used by wheelchair users...this isn't an exaggeration).

You need loads of different apps to use various companies chargers.

Horrible.
