We literally have my grandmother's tall brass lamp in our living room and we use it most days. We got a new shade for it though. The original one was a bit tatty.

A chrome floor lamp in corner behind sofa, with flexi shade to adjust for reading. An LED cherry blossom tree in another corner...which doubles up as a xmas tree, just add baubles and beads and its done. And a small lamp on my desk at other end of room. I never put the big lights on.
