I just Googled Queen tribute Leeds to see if there was a book of condolence and all I got was details of a Freddy Mercury tribute act in a working mens club.

Yes somewhat tbh ...

It's all we have ever known in our lifetime and despite some of her family members being less than wholesome I respected the Queen for her unfaltering dedication to duty..

May she rest in peace x

I'm sure it's sad for her family and friends. I'm neither.

I'm completely bemused by what I'm hearing and seeing.

Not even remotely. I never knew her, I never met her, she is not related to me in any way, shape or form. She's just somebody else's relative who appears on the TV now and again.

Not sad and teary like many but I do empathise with their loss.

I may not agree with certain decisions/actions/things re royalty in general and how this royal family in particular conduct themselves in life but I respected her dignity, grace and commitment to her role.

My view is this, right or wrong...

I'm no royalist but I got no time for it. There's certain things to take the piss out of, but the death of someone loved by millions ain't one of them. I know people chunter on about a cushty life in a Palace and never having money worries n all that, but half of these fuckers would bail after a week of doing her job coz it would be too hard.

She probably helps more people in an hour than any "normal" person helps in their entire lifetime and people fail to consider that. She made a promise to serve her country until the end and she kept it, when 80% of people can't keep a promise for more than a week.

She put her personal feelings aside in the name of duty, for 70 fucking years. She lived and breathed her role, and yeah, there were times she could probably have done things better, but she literally lived and learnt in the public eye, under immense scrutiny. We get a warning if we fuck up in our job, we ain't got the eyes of the world watching. She's a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother and has been the only constant thing in most of our lives.

I don't think people appreciate we are tolerated by other countries out of respect for the Queen. Fuck all to do with our government, fuck all to do with us as a people. Other leaders admired and respected her. She had far more political clout than she's given credit for, simply by leaving her political views at the door and being welcoming and caring. Her lack of politics has saved our arses.

Yes I'm sad. Sad at the ugliness I'm seeing, sad for a family who've lost their mentor and loved one, sad for people who she meant so much to. Sad for all those who've served on the armed forces and are seeing such disrespect towards "their boss" who they literally put their life on the line for. And yeah, I'm sad for myself. As much as the monarchy can be divisive, she always tried to bring unity.

Not a fan of the whole royal institution, but she was a mother and a grandmother, her family should be able to greive in private, the same as you or I would if a member if our family pass away.

Last nights debarcle in the forums just shows what a nasty world we live in at this present time.

As much as the monarchy can be divisive, she always tried to bring unity."

Beautifully put x

It's not a null point at all. I'm pretty sure if you sat on your arse while everyone attended to every need for you and all you had to do was think and speak, you'd be full of beans at 96 as well. Meanwhile, someone who has had to actually work for a living might not be so lucky

It's a little odd. I'm no real royalist and I'm wondering why we can be saddened when we hear of the death of actors, politicians or people we barely had knowledge of, but when the 70 year head of state dies unexpectedly - because they didn't open the local supermarket, do more tik tocks or some voice-over to stay in the media I'm not immediately googling their life's history.

It's quite rare to belong to a nation where a monarch has been seen as a standard, not as a dictator.

"My view is this, right or wrong...

As much as the monarchy can be divisive, she always tried to bring unity."

When we talk about unity, are we talking about the way she was a unifying figure across the many countries that many wish she never ruled over in the first place??

As I said yesterday, it’s sad for many and I respect those grieving but I cannot be a requirement for people to view her as some kind of Saint like figure when she simply wasn’t for many people.

Those that are incredibly saddened by her passing, I’m sorry to you. But I think that people are for some reason completely shocked that her passing may not be that sad for some and actually for many she wasn’t tremendous or someone people think deserved power or whatever and certainly was not someone I think many people think represented something that is particularly nice or good or kind or anything but horrific. And what I think people should remind themselves is that those feelings are also valid. And love for the Queen does not invalidate them. Love for or even respect for the royal family and their history and what they stand for does not invalidate those that don’t have any positive feelings toward them.

Sometimes on here you see people that are saying you can’t say this and you can’t say that anymore and everyone is a snowflake and this has just been them wishing and willing people to shut up because they don’t agree.

Unfortunately, we are not all the heroes in everyone’s story. And death does not protect us from critique. Perhaps not the same but when Mandela died, when George Floyd died, when Kobe Bryant died, everyone was so quick to highlight their shortcomings almost immediately after their death and though it hurt me, it taught me that in this life, in this world, nobody is as respectful for those they don’t like as they want others to be for those they do. Which is shit. But it is what it is. I’m waffling here but I just feel like everyone should be the people they are always telling others to be when it comes to hearing things they don’t like on here.

I don't agree people shouldn't comment on a thread if they don't buy into the opinion of the majority on it. However I do believe there are people who are being very incentive and whilst they may not like the monarchy or the Queen, they are showing very little respect and understanding but a lot of people are wanting to pay tribute to the Queen.

As much as the monarchy can be divisive, she always tried to bring unity."

Very eloquently put and this is how I feel also.

I'm feeling a little sad, yes, not the kind of sadness you feel when a family member passes away though.

I wanted her to live to be a 100. It feels weird.

"I find it hugely impressive that she was still working at 96

Yeah all those years of manual labour and working on the tools really took its toll on her

A fraction of people do manual labour. Proper null point

It's not a null point at all. I'm pretty sure if you sat on your arse while everyone attended to every need for you and all you had to do was think and speak, you'd be full of beans at 96 as well. Meanwhile, someone who has had to actually work for a living might not be so lucky"

Unless you do the same job as someone else you have no real idea of what that job entails. You can only surmise.

Sadness is not what I feel, I think its more a feeling of respect for a job well done and a fine example she set to others who follow, she has had a damn good innings and enjoyed pretty good health. Sadness is what I feel for that little girl who was shot, bowel babe, my friends son who took his own life a few weeks ago and all folks who do not enjoy good health, this is an entirely different thing.

I think the problem is it all feels like it came as a bit of a shock. I know the Queen had been in ill health but there was no indication until yesterday that the end was imminent so I think it's caught everyone off guard.

I have a different take on it all, especially the born into it arguments.

Yes she was born into privilege and wealth as I was born to a working class household. But just like myself she’s made the best of the situation she found herself in. She never asked to be Queen, but unless she was willing to do something really dramatic like abdicate, someone else would’ve taken the role on.

There’s very few arguments about her time as Queen, even those who dislike the Monarchy (that includes me) agree she was a great head of state.

So I’ll respect the mourning and carry on as normal, to answer the Ops question, I’m not sad but I’m not happy either.

"My view is this, right or wrong...

As much as the monarchy can be divisive, she always tried to bring unity.

Then I just wouldn’t comment on all the threads if I wasn’t feeling the same as the majority on them. But hey that’s just me. "

The band died when Freddie did. Adam Lambert is no Freddie as much as he calls himself the new Freddie Mercury. Brian May needs to let Queen just be the memory of its excellence and stop trying to revive it. Freddie wouldn't want this

I think another thing people don't consider as to why folks are melancholy is the connection. Hear me out.

My fondest memories I have made with my dad have been over Meat Loaf. My dad had been a huge fan for as long as I could remember. I took him to his first Meat Loaf gig. We shared those experiences and I'm forever thankful for them. When Meat Loaf died it was very sombre for me. I was genuinely really upset. It was the realisation that that was it, forever memories with no new ones to be made over our love of the man and the music.

Many many people have that kind of connection with their grandparents regarding the Queen, and her death signals the end of memory making and the loss of that link with their loved one.

"I'm sad that's she's gone it doesn't feel real, and also its sad that part of her role involved her sending telegrams to people as they reached 100 and sadly she never got there herself. RIP God save the Queen.

I thought about this only minutes ago. How many people held onto life in their later years for that sole reason? "

My next door neighbour was a d day veteran he held on to 99 by staying active. He still went down the pub! Lockdown came along and he wasn't going out and I think that's what killed him. And he kept saying I'll get my telegram soon. Very sad. RIP Harry.

"My view is this, right or wrong...

As much as the monarchy can be divisive, she always tried to bring unity."

Nicely done P. Yesterday I was sad, and I still am for the country's loss, but now I feel strangely happy for her. She is finally free from the burden of duty she felt obliged to carry for her whole adult life, to literally her final days. History will probably never see her like again, certainly nobody here will.

..and if they think I'm changing my Queen's Crowns for Kings, they can jog on..

Not sad, but different ..

I lost my 'queen' my Mother back in April and I think this period of mourning will help me along the way..

I do feel a certain amount of manipulation from the media suggesting we should all be sad etc but that was expected...

You could argue this whole ' out of respect' thing affecting and closing shops, sporting fixtures etc is strange and one could argue 'out of respect' they should continue to open and participate..

The funeral I have heard is the 19th and yes I can see an argument for closing down just for the day, but let's not milk it.

Sorry for the loss of your mum.

I think people are forgetting that the Queen was the head of state and in most countries around the world they do similar When the airhead of state dies.

Thankyou for putting into words what I could not. "

Very very well put. And if people feel so little for our queen. That's fine. Just have enough respect for those that do and keep the bile for a more appropriate time.

London

So yesterday we had a bit of retail therapy around good old central London. Before the news was broken I was looking at all of these souvenirs of the queen.

I wished I had got something like a mug at least. I bet the price of 'em has gone up x10 now.

But seriously it is all so sad. I am still in shock at her sudden death.

"My view is this, right or wrong...

As much as the monarchy can be divisive, she always tried to bring unity.

Then I just wouldn’t comment on all the threads if I wasn’t feeling the same as the majority on them. But hey that’s just me.

Same here Nora.

But some folk just can't help themselves. "

WHO specifically are the folks you mean?

And as has been clarified to Nora already, all these threads are not RIP threads. They’re threads asking different things and people are more than entitled to answer.

Are the BBC going to dedicate the same amount of coverage to those pensioners dying of starvation or the cold. At least she had the best healthcare and didn't have to die on a trolley in a hospital corridor. But on a down side whilst she was paying respect to her husband the politicians were throwing parties. So I have mixed emotions

Her passing was a massive shock to me.

She was a mighty and wonderful woman indeed.

She will be missed dearly. Beautiful, kind, hard working woman who did every millimetre of her duty as a Queen. No one can compare to her.

May her soul rest in peace and May she be reunited with Prince Phillip.

I’m not that fussed really , the queen was probably the only decent royal . The rest have mostly done or been involved in domestic stuff that most families do so they are a family but priveliged to the hilt . Social media has had a lot to do with bringing them to the forefront of the public . So to me it’s just another day in the life

Cultural significance?

Considering people have expressed they didn’t care about the royals or the Queen? Culturally, George Floyd’s death was more significant than most other people’s in recent memory. And felt by communities across the world- similar to how people feel about this death in many ways? No?
