One of my absolute favourites from over the years full of great humour but the ending is so sad and poignant.

I don't care if he's been rogering the Duke of York with a prize-winning leek. He shot my pigeon!

Coincidentally we watched an episode last night. It has got some great laughs in it.

The thing I don't get is why the studio audience laughs at some of the really dark stuff, like Blackadder talking to Melchett about the slaughter in the trenches before anybody gets 20 yards. It's relevant but I could never see why people laughed at that.

In the very last episode when Melchett utterly betrays Captain Darling and Bob comes to collect him, it's horrible, and yet the audience finds it hilarious. I have never understood that.

On the flip-side, the last episode has one of the best lines in the whole thing: "Is it as cunning as a fox that's been appointed Professor of Cunning at Oxford University?" That's an amazing line but doesn't get a laugh because of the terrible situation they are all in.

Anyway, series 2,3 and four were some of the greatest comedy ever made in the UK.

I know what you mean, I always thought one of the greatest things about this show was not only the obvious comedy of three guys being trapped together but also being able to make comedy out of the absolute absurdity of history like this without taking away from the bravery of those on the front

^^^This. Dark humour, the best of British.

I have a a cunning plan.

The ending was handled with great dignity.

To my shame, I've never seen it.

Probably watched it via clips and endless quotations, just completely back to front.

I am a huge fan of 2-4. 1 was okay but they actually reversed the roles of Blackadder and Baldrick in the later one, which was a brilliant move. Like most people I was totally caught out by the last episode.

Audience? More likely canned laughter inserted in the final mix

I think they were going for ironic humour, but then I'm a sick fucker.

My favourite is series 2, but the final scene in the last episode of series 4 when they’re preparing to go over the top of the trenches is so poignant. Imagine 4 series of some of the finest British comedy writing ever then an ending like that.

Genius.

I always thought Blackadder was better as the 'daft' one. I also prefer the first series as a result. 2-4 were decent and funny though!

In GW1 British Tornado crews can be heard on recordings saying ’wibble’ as they are on ops over Iraq.
