FabSwingers.com forum: How to clean up soot?

So like our landlords (lol blame culture) wash-dryer decided to set on fire while we were both out and nearly killed my mates dog (neighbour saved him!). It coated the entire house with soot but overall not much damage just smell + black stuff.

Anyone got any tips for cleaning it?

And don't say 'landlord should do it' because you know how fast insurance companies are lol

oh dear!!! u need to really open every window and air the place out then hoover every surface if possible with attachment then its really hot water and cloths lots of them!! its a big job!!

Soot is difficult to get rid of, it doesn't just dust off, It tends to leave a dirty greasy film behind.

I know the insurance companies are slow, but tbh, it's a specialist cleaning company that is needed, then a decorator afterwards.

I'd leave it to the insurers because if you try and fail, they may refuse to put it right for you if you decide to make a claim at a later date.

Blimey, thank goodness no one was hurt, hope poor little fido is ok now and none the worse for his ordeal.

If its loose soot I would try to vaccuum up as much as possible, afterwards of course different surfaces will require different solutions and it depends how much soot there actually is. It might be easier to give the walls etc a new coat of paint than trying to scrub them clean. Fabrics will need specialist cleaning as will carpets (if you have any).

Insurance wise I would think that they cannot leave you in a possible health hazard. Try talking with the insurers personally as things will not be seen as urgent by your landlord as yourselves, maybe.

Soot I would suggest can and does cause respiratory problems some potentially very serious if for instance Asbestos is present.

ChemDry....... even if just advice, they are helpful.. Work closely with them here and they do have some amazing cleaning results..

Normally with fires.. cleaning is just the start.. decorating and replacing is a better option..

please remember that soot is a carbon and such it is carsongenic( a cause of cancer's) and highly toxic to boot, so good preparation and health and safety gear is a must, and the resultant waste has tio be desposed of carefully too.

pleased to hear that the pooch didn't suffer but sorry to hear about your bad luck.

i'd leave it to the pro's myself and they do a fast efficent job and they are on the case within a few days because of the health issues
