All the stargazing enthusiasts will no doubt know this, but that little bright dot to the left of the moon this evening is in fact Jupiter.

Amazing to think that it's the biggest planet in our solar system and its surface area is 122 times larger than that of earth. Shows just how far away that baby really is!

"Amazing to think that it's the biggest planet in our solar system and its surface area is 122 times larger than that of earth. Shows just how far away that baby really is!"

It's also the reason our little ball is still here. Jupiter is our cosmic vacuum cleaner sucking up all the rogue comets and asteroids that would otherwise have an unhindered path to the inner planets in our solar system. It also keeps the asteroid belt where it is.

Even with a low powered "cheapy" telescope you should be able to se e the Red Spot, and if you can find Saturn, the rings

Didn't work out so well for the dinosaurs though.

There was a lot more comets hurtling around the solar system then. Ole Joop couldn't get them all.

I thought the Red Spot had disappeared? It is a storm 3 times the size of the Earth that had been raging for 300 years but recent images had shown it to have died out.

Well again, good job for us. I don't fancy being a snack for spinosaurus.

If you have a smartphone you can download an app whereby you hold your phone up to the night sky and it will tell you what the stars/planets in the sky are.

Google do one for Android unimaginatively called The Night Sky, and iPhone users have can download a version of it for Apple phones.

Yep, its always cloudy in York when the meteors are around or the northern lights are showing. I usually have luck with lunar eclipses though.

"whats the other star/planet there? at 5 oclock?"

It's Aldebaran and it is a red giant star located about 65 light years away in the zodiac constellation of Taurus. With an average apparent magnitude of 0.87 it is the brightest star in the constellation and is one of the brightest stars in the nighttime sky. The name Aldebaran is Arabic (al-dabaran) and translates literally as "the follower", presumably because this bright star appears to follow the Pleiades, or "Seven Sisters" star cluster in the night sky.

Hey, all stars are male. You don't think the Creator of the Universe would let female stars run amok out there do you?

Imagine that, a female star with PMT.

Point taken.

Correction: There ARE female stars. Give them a VERY wide birth.
