Is it free if I charge my phone in my car?

I'd be doing the journey anyway. So I might as well plug it in. But does it use more petrol and if so how much? Considering the alternator in the car keeps the car battery going as I drive and ultimately petrol powers the car, does it cost me more petrol than if I didn't charge it?

But the price of petrol is pretty high.

I wonder how many miles you'd need to do for a full charge and what the untis of electric would be vs petrol.

No, it's not free. There will be an extra load on the alternator to generate the electricity. That in turn will cause very slightly more fuel to be burnt.

Assuming that it's not an electric vehicle. If it is, it will just drain the batteries a bit that will then incur extra cost when you recharge the car.

Totally free. I have my car running in my drive as we speak. Got a multi-adapter coming through the letterbox with the TV and xbox plugged into it. Lifehacks at their finest.

Have a social in their car, just unplug your phone, to allow the fridge to be used as well, keeping refreshments cool

They could charge your car battery too

It's still using a load more fuel, you aren't paying for it though. Unless there's a tax burden on you for payment in kind.

Just go to McD's with a pre-made sandwich hidden in an old big mac box and charge it there.

Bonus points for energy efficiency if you also take a suitcase with a 4 way adaptor inside, with additional battery chargers, power banks and any other rechargeable items inside.

If you take a change of clothing, a wig and a hat you can double up and do an am and pm charging shift.

A USB phone charger runs at 5 volts and about 2 amps, 5x2 = 10 watts. That’s about the same amount of power as using the radio, or about a quarter of the power of one headlight. Don’t give it another thought - you waste more fuel by getting one more red traffic light on your journey.

This probably depends on the car and phone etc, but my car takes forever to charge my phone. I plug it in while using it for sat nav, and over an hour or so journey the charge might increase 4%.

Mine's electric, so I'm charging it from the house, while the house charges from it. It's basically perpetual motion.
