I've never watched any continuously since I was a teenager but we always watch the obligatory big christmas episodes. They were always supposed to show a heightened version of real life, but to keep up with other tv shows they try to throw in too much action and don't develop stories before they conclude them. The characters are rarely developed as well now.

If you look at a soap like Brookside in the 80s it was supposed to mirror the social realism of what Liverpool was like at that point. A real housing estate was used, and it was people dealing with real issues like debt and depression. Sadly, a soap that moved at a more realistic or human pace probably wouldn't be watched now and yet the big silly storylines with gangsters and serial killers also get complained about as well.

So yeah, they probably have. It would be interesting to see a streaming service commission one though. Maybe with darker, grittier content where they can get away with a bit more and have more creative freedom without a watershed.
