I’m lucky to spend a lot of time there working, what a stunning diverse place. Anyone else love it?

I used to live in Southampton so have spent quite a lot of time over the years in the new forest. Absolutely lovely place.

It's lovely, all the ponies and donkey's, then the donkey's trying to park an 18 foot camper van in a compact parking space. Magical.

It's not the worst place in the world to live. Makes for a pleasant commute at least. Plenty of places to have some outdoor activities also but with so many places to look it becomes needle in a haystack

couple, us we him her.

It's too busy these days, full of assholes who don't respect the animals and speed.

Litter everywhere, overly expensive hotels and bed and breakfasts.

All the campsites are full of middle class hooligans who's idea of fun is letting their kid's run amok whilst they sit around getting pissed and littering.

The area is beautiful but finding a quiet place is getting more difficult.

It's ok in small doses - & I have to admit there's some cracking pubs there,

Not a patch on Cornwall, Devon, the lakes or Yorkshire mind,

Having recently come back from north Devon I agree completely.

South Derbyshire

I spent a few days there this summer and while I could appreciate its beauty (and how can you not adore the ponies), there was something about it I just didn't *get*. It felt almost like it was staged for tourists. I couldn't sense any depth to it.

Completely different to, say, Cornwall where it's apparent how humans are just temporary guests in a wild and unforgiving land.

It's also just about the most Tory place I've ever been, and not in a fun, devil-may-care, amoral, champagne way. Just incredibly Daily Mail/Express views everywhere. Stifling.

A shame, because it is a gorgeous place.

What I want to know is what happened to the old forest did someone cut it down?

Yes. Was farmed from centuries and the soil turned acidic. The Normans began replanting it as a hunting ground .

There used to be a comedian who ran a jewellers in Lyndhurst. Juicy Jewels. He gave you a free show everything you went in.

He hated the locals and used to say their lifestyle was all on the drip. Sadly they drove him out.

A beautiful place and I worked for a year there. In Beaulieu. To see deer cross the road on a misty morning as you went into work was always magical.

It's a bit of a double edged sword though. As beautiful and serene as it is its also quite dangerous both for the animals and the drivers in winter.

Even at 40 animals loom out of the mist. It's worse during gritting season when the cattle are licking up the salt on the road. Makes a very wired, eyes on stalks for 30 minutes experience.

As for the pigs that are running around right now, you have virtually no hope of seeing one of them bolting out in front of you

I did a military escape and evasion course there one January, out for a week in the woods with minimal gear. That was interesting. I have spent more pleasant visits recently..
