Porn Magazines Past and Present

Circa 1970s British adult magazines have always held an affection for me, from the art style to the “girl next door” nature of the women that appeared in them. Discovering “hedge porn” as a young man was always a delight and set me on a path of various kinks (electric blue eye shadow, pink lip gloss, cane furniture and soft focus photos, to name but a few).

Although the magazines were explicit, because of various laws in this country at the time, they were “softer” in nature, in contrast to the spaff on your face, “aggressive” style porn we see today.

Now I am not naive, I am sure the adult industry back in those days was no picnic for the women taking part, but there was something more “wholesome” in seeing Betty from Bolton (neither her real name or place of birth) smiling from the multicoloured pages of these publications, whilst slowly (over the course of 10-20 photos) revealing all her delights.

As such my reminiscing got the better of me a some weeks ago, and after much research, I produced a version of one of these magazines with a friend, true to the old art style from days of yore, with text boxes and the “slow reveal” across multiple pages (the cover was a joy to create). To what end, you may ask? Well we are going to do a few more sessions in the near future and then I will be printing out and binding this into a modern take on an old classic, a “wank mag” of my friend, for my friend.

Point of this thread? Don’t know really, maybe a couple of questions:

What did you delight in, in your formative years, that you would like to recreate now?

Would you ever consider creating your own “magazine” for your partner or friend? I think this applies to men and women. With stories and photosets

Are you a fan of the old “softer” style porn or the modern version?

Randomly I was watching Dickinsons Real Deal yesterday and some dude was on there with a collection of 300 vintage porn mags. Obviously they weren't his, he found them in a house clearance

The dealer only offered him £150 or something so off he went to auction. I think they ended up fetching a couple of grand.

Made me wish I'd rescued more from hedges back in the 80s.

I guess it’s a cultural heritage, art type of perspective. There’s something rather nice about having a publication in one’s hands, the difference between an e-book and owning the physical thing I guess. The added benefit being that if the power goes out, I can still crack one off

Yeah I think so. Dickinson was all like 'it'll probably make a few hundred at auction' no way even I know there will be loads of collectors for vintage porn.

I'm always surprised when I see porn mags in my local newsagents though. I wouldn't think many buy new ones these days.

And yes that's a good point about the power cut, so long as you have a candle

Reminds me of a great line from Krusty the Clown in the Simpsons: "I can't read porno by candlelight? Who am I? Abe Lincoln?!"

Definitely the retro era for me. Women had their unique identity and eroticism. There was an artistry to the photos and staging. Now the women more or less, are cut from the same cloth and and I'm surprised they don't melt under the studio lighting.

Having reviewed a number of older publications as part of my research the models of the past seem much more relaxed, more “natural” in their posing. Hey look I am sure that wasn’t the case for all and I am sure the industry was ripe with “ne’er dowels” but modern porn seems less natural in pose and structure”

I actually prefer the older mags from the 1980s 1990s. Leave much to the imagination and women in teasing poses wearing stockings and suspenders is my preference. Escort magazine is a favourite of mine.

The only problem with hedge porn was you needed an axe to unstick the pages. I have an affection for the readers wives style porn of the 80s and 90s, though always found the semi-hardcore David Sullivan titles very weird. MF simulated sets where there was no penetration or oral and the guys weren't allowed to have a stiffy.

There was a brief vogue for slightly censored harder stuff - any penetration would either be scribbled over with a marker or would have stickers covering it (that tore the page if they were taken off).

I need to see guys in action, so it's only hardcovre porn for me. The UK was mired in strict censorship laws for too long

My introduction to porn mags was in the gents toilets on my first day at work as a naive 16yr old, several of them tucked behind the toilet cistern.. I snuck one away to home for reading material of course.. later got into buying them Escort and the like.. many a happy hour spent up in my room exploring those lovely naked women..

The rush of buying them when I was a teen too

Well I now have a 70s/80s style magazine of a favoured friend which I can slide under the bed. I can somewhat relive that moment as a young man when I would grazed my knuckles trying to extricate my favourite publication from its hiding place, with the pure joy of seeing “Ethel from Exeter” (not her real name or location) beaming back at me from the cover of “Decadents Digest”

There's a wonderfull website you can find by googling vintage erotica forums.

Has scans of all the escorts, fiestas, club magazine etc etc etc from yester year.

Reminded me that the first naked women I ever saw was Stacey Owens lol.

Indeed. Donna from Essex accidentally dropped a chocolate eclair in her lap but fortunately Tracey is helping clean up. Good times.

What a shout...id forgotten all about her!!!

Yes, it was Fiesta or Es*ort. (Why were they named after 1970's Ford cars? Or were the cars named after the mags??).

She also made appearances in '40 plus' and '50 plus' mags too.

Was ripping up floorboards to run wires/cables for the Home Cinema room two years ago, and found a couple of issues of Razzle under the floor!

They were really dusty, but in excellent condition - no signs of jizz, either. We know the previous occupant who owned the house at the time they were published, so they were clearly his!
