I stole that from reddit, but I also found the answer for you OP.

"Tarzan recognizes that he is not an ape, and from his interactions with local natives, he sees hair on the face as a sign of “degrading apehood” (the locals are beardless, whereas the apes have hair on the face). He shaves to keep the hair on his face from growing. If you’re wondering where he got the knife, he found it in the cabin his parents lived in before they were killed.
