Famous TV commentator-Kenneth Wolstenholme-on the day: "It is now!".

Although I have virtually no interest in football, then or since, this has to be the most exciting sporting event EVER!

The atmosphere everywhere was electric!

I have heard personal testimony from Irish citizens who lived in England during the second world war, and particularly during the German Blitzkrieg that there was a fantastic feeling of togetherness in the citizenry, a sense of common purpose against the aggressive for, that gradually dissipated after VE Day, never to return.
