Lots of awareness about this in sports like Tennis and Athletics. Some blaming their defeat on their period. Justified or is it time to just man up.

Did you just tell women to 'man up'?!! You really are clueless about how menstruation works.

Back in my day at school there used to be a bench full of girls off games every week. I didn’t quite understand why at the time. But do now.

No, it’s definitely justified. If you don’t have periods you don’t know how much it actually changes in your body, it’s not just a little bleeding. If men spent one week in four feeling as shit as we often do, it’d be a different world.

Definitely not, it’s kinda crazy for women trying to be elite athletes and juggling this thing, that for some, completely throws off their training/match performance

You could be at a disadvantage down to bad luck/timing

Are you aware some women experience periods as painful as a heart attack?

And telling us to man up is a tad toxic. Id love to see a man bleed and in agony but still carry on

Id love to see a man carry a human inside them and then push it out, just to come out of hospital and cook dinner while doing the washing caused by the labour

Or maybe, just maybe, some men should woman up

Just make sure the string is tucked right up because it's really not sexy looking up a tennis skirt to see a string dangling.

To be fair... Tom hears all the time how painful childbirth is but then the silly sausages decide to do it all over again.

Apart from these BDSM types have you ever heard a man who has been kicked in the balls say.. I fancy that again...

Regardless if we talk about men's or women's sport, it's never a good look when an athlete is trying to justify a loss. With that being said...the equivalent for menstrual pain (in some cases- and I'm talking about pain scale here, not the exact form of pain) for a man, would be a kick in the balls...it literally makes your legs go numb. Now do you think any male athlete would be able to perform if they get hit in the balls every 2 minutes during a match/game/fight? I think not...

Only the individual lady knows how it affects her, opinions on this are as irrelevant as it gets.

In my experience of being a man who knows women it seems there are many extremes so as I say only the lady menstruating knows how easy or debilitating it is.

Prior to children period pain was a nightmare. Didn’t really have any medication available apart from Anadin . We had no choice but to work through it . Nuns did not allow us to skip anything due to pain .. they were mean !!

No real excuse these days as periods can be stopped altogether if they wanted . People need to stop blaming monthly cycle and woman up .

It's not just about menstrual pain or bleeding. Laxity of ligaments, reduced muscle power and a whole host of other issues are empirically evidenced to impacts female athletes.

And taking hormonal medication to stop periods is certainly not the answer - these meds can cause even more issues from a training perspective due to the side effects.

Eilish McColgan, a very successful distance runner, is on record this week discussing the issues her periods cause and the issues she had when taking contraceptives. She stopped taking them in the end.

I went to an old girl's school and every 2 weeks we used to go swimming. It was amazing how many of us had periods every 2 weeks! At one point our PE teacher threatened to get in a gynaecologist as obviously we all had serious gynecology issues.

Yep. Dull.

If I did want to post a serious post on the OP, I'd say Dina A-S (one of our best ever athletes, btw) didn't blame her defeat on her period, but said they explained her cramps, and called for more research, which can't be a bad thing. But I can't be bothered to.

I saw Dina Asher Smith's "rant" after her race yesterday, and I totally think that she's got a point. If it was a "man issue" there would have been much more research/time/money invested in trying to find an issue.

As a bloke, I can't imagine how disruptive it is for your body to be working against you, causing pain and discomfort, and be constantly changing throughout the month.

Working against you? Wtf...?

Excellent simping my good sir.

Its the body doing what it's biologically designed to do isn't it...

There are chemical treatments to stop it but they inhibit elite performers too in other ways.

But look... your being a little hysterical about this... its a period. It's not the paralympics that's true debilitation and adversity being overcome by men and women. Women who have periods i suspect.

Maybe reframe your understanding of debilitating and adversity.

I mean all women in the field face the same potential issue... have done since time began I would suspect...I dunno

Your assessment would be completely accurate if we were to consider women to be nothing more than the baby making and maintaining machines that their biology facilitates. Thankfully over the last few thousand years attitudes towards women have changed and in many cases they are even allowed to dream of a fulfilling life.

But look... your being a little hysterical about this... its a period. It's not the paralympics that's true debilitation and adversity being overcome by men and women. Women who have periods i suspect.

Maybe reframe your understanding of debilitating and adversity.

I mean all women in the field face the same potential issue... have done since time began I would suspect...I dunno

Ladies get a grip and get over yourselves...

You go with the tools ya got... "

Of course it's working against them. They can't, without chemical intervention, plan when their period comes and it's not just about that one week when it's flowing.

Just because it's a natural cycle it doesn't mean it can't get in the way of both training and competing. At the level these women are competing even the mildest of symptoms can have massive impacts.

And you're wrong. It doesn't affect all women as not all women experience menstruation in the same way. For some it is incredibly painful and debilitating. They are housebound due to the pain and heavy bleeding that is difficult to control.

The only bit correct in your little rant is 'i dunno'

I saw Dina Asher Smith's "rant" after her race yesterday, and I totally think that she's got a point. If it was a "man issue" there would have been much more research/time/money invested in trying to find an issue.

As a bloke, I can't imagine how disruptive it is for your body to be working against you, causing pain and discomfort, and be constantly changing throughout the month.

Youre suggesting having an opinion counter to bandwagon simp approach means no 'vagina' I assume?

What a world you desire to live in..."

I'm suggesting that your attitude towards women shown in this thread will put off women. "Get a grip" "professional victim" "you're being a little hysterical". I doubt you know anything about how debilitating periods and related issues can be for some women. I doubt you've even read what female athletes have said - just the headlines.

Thankfully over the last few thousand years attitudes towards women have changed and in many cases they are even allowed to dream of a fulfilling life.

Exactly, everyone is focusing on the physicality of periods but combine that with how it makes you feel mentally it's no wonder that some athletes are not performing on par. Headspace and mind set are crucial to performance.

I find that these archaic views towards women abhorrent and should have no place in a modern world...and as for men telling women how they should feel that is disgusting, I will wait for a time when you are bleeding out of your arse for 5 days straight combined with the physical debilitation and mental health associated with that before telling you to 'man up' hey, it's not that bad, I got kicked in the bollocks once....

Dina Asher-Smith had calf cramps this week which ruled her out of the 100m at the Euro Championships.

“It was just ‘girl stuff’,” she replied. “It’s just frustrating. It’s one of those things. ”

Speaking after Britain’s women’s 4x100m women qualified fastest for Saturday’s final, Imani-Lara Lansiquot bravely revealed that she was currently on her on period in Munich.

The sprinter then questioned why more money was not being devoted to research to help combat the effects of the menstrual cycle.

“One hundred per cent there should be more funding,” said Lansiquot. “I still think it’s quite shocking that it’s taboo. I’m going through it right now.

Years ago it was a taboo subject, even if you were having a bad time with periods the Doctors more or less said get on with it. I am glad now that women are finally speaking out and Health professionals are admitting it isn't just a "get on with it" type of issue

I didn't suffer too much for a few years before mine stopped altogether ( yayyyyyy at stopped altogether ) but I did suffer when younger, in silence as again, there was a "get on with it" attitude.

Obviously not everyone is the same and it isn't always every day of your period that this could happen but bleeding so heavy that two pads and a tampon won't stop it leaking through your clothes and onto whatever you were sitting on, Clots , bad cramps, terrible mood swings for at least the week before and through it, crying all the time, sensitive boobs etc etc

Now try and train while that is potentially happening and then run a race in hardly any clothes worrying that leaks could potentially show...yeah , lets not mention it being a reason why I was off my game, just in case it upsets someone.

I am glad women are speaking out.

No real excuse these days as periods can be stopped altogether if they wanted . People need to stop blaming monthly cycle and woman up . "

I can’t take the pill for medical reasons, it puts me at a high risk of stroke. The injection gave me three weeks of constant bleeding every month, and the implant wasn’t much better. No, periods can’t automatically be stopped.

I fall into the same category.

Put on the pill aged 14 to try and help with my periods because of the amount of time I was missing at school. Final straw was being found unc0nscious in the corridor by the janitor after vomiting due to the cramps.

A few years of relative calm then followed, in terms of period symptoms. It was only when I came off the pill in my early 20s and my sex drive rocketed that I realised how much the medication was basically flat lining my sex drive. So the side effects are massively under appreciated.

I can't take certain types the pill now due to health issues.

I've cancelled 2 days out with the kids during the summer holidays because of my period. On my heaviest day I was needing to change my tampon and towel every 90mins at least.

My GP and I would both like to get me started on HRT ASAP to see if it helps but due to some other complications that's on hold.

Really !! I can't believe a women is saying this !! Just because it was awful for you when you were younger and you had to carry on as normal doesn't mean it should still be like that for women nowadays.

I'm younger than you but i had to carry on as normal all the time to but that doesn't make me say it should still be like that for women nowadays. I would hate to think my grandaughter had to have the same experience i had.

I've always been grateful I've not had the physical symptoms as badly as some women have as some have shared on this thread. Hormones have had a huge impact on me emotionally - at one point I was prescribed a low dose of Valium because it was so bad each month. And for all those women who just jump on the Pill and have no issues, there are just as many who have serious problems with it and other contraception.

What struck me about the athletes talking about this topic was that some studies suggest they're much more likely to be injured whilst they're menstruating. That's quite a major problem for an athlete. And it only affects the female kind.

It's due to ligament laxity in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, when progesterone is high. Taking some kinds of contraception will also have a similar effect, due to the progesterone content.

I don't have a menstrual cycle anymore - perhaps it's a bit late for me but for women who can't "plan" their periods using contraception it must be a nightmare for an athlete.

This is something that's really affecting me at the minute. Contraception makes me feel unwell so I can't take it to plan my period.

The five days before my period are worst for me. If I've got a race, I know it'll be crap. Weirdly, I run better on my period then the five days before.

I'm glad it's being talked about.

She didn't " blame her defeat on her period" though. I certainly didn't read it that way. I quoted what she said further up. She was asking for more research as was another member of the relay team.

"This is something that's really affecting me at the minute. Contraception makes me feel unwell so I can't take it to plan my period.

The five days before my period are worst for me. If I've got a race, I know it'll be crap. Weirdly, I run better on my period then the five days before.

I'm glad it's being talked about. "

I agree.

I'm fortunate that when I still had periods they were rarely a problem but the menstrual cycle and hormonal issues cause significant problems for some women.

It definitely needs to be considered and more research done to enable all women to exercise and compete more effectively.

Those men who think we should "get over ourselves" can bugger off.

"Lots of awareness about this in sports like Tennis and Athletics. Some blaming their defeat on their period. Justified or is it time to just man up.

Cal

Working against you? Wtf...?

Excellent simping my good sir.

Its the body doing what it's biologically designed to do isn't it...

There are chemical treatments to stop it but they inhibit elite performers too in other ways.

But look... your being a little hysterical about this... its a period. It's not the paralympics that's true debilitation and adversity being overcome by men and women. Women who have periods i suspect.

Maybe reframe your understanding of debilitating and adversity.

I mean all women in the field face the same potential issue... have done since time began I would suspect...I dunno

Ladies get a grip and get over yourselves...

You go with the tools ya got...

Your assessment would be completely accurate if we were to consider women to be nothing more than the baby making and maintaining machines that their biology facilitates. Thankfully over the last few thousand years attitudes towards women have changed and in many cases they are even allowed to dream of a fulfilling life.

Cal

----

Does my statement appear to exclude them doing or leading exactly that, i dont think so? ...

Merely pointing out a factual biological function triggered this?

"

Your statement quite blatantly suggests that women should shut-up and accept it, and that they had no right to complain about the situation.

If this was a "man issue", men would have found a way to mitigate the issues decades ago.

"Like all great and influential comedians and satirical social commentators Tom's job exists to go to the well were some do not enjoy the taste of the water.

That's great. Did you have an example of a woman blaming defeat on her period though? Be interested to see that.

Dina Asher-Smith has been talking about this recently. She explained how her period negatively affected her performance.

Sorry - just read the entire thread. She wasn't blaming it on her period but I wondered if that was what Tom was referring to. But didn't explain it very well. Sorry!

Wow!

I have endo this means for me when not on treatment to prevent periods altogether it’s 1/4 weeks ovulation pain and cramps, 2/4 weeks period cramps, bleeding of a level max tampon and max pad changed hourly is necessary, pain so bad I’ve fallen unconscious, leg spasms, back spasms, migraine, tunnel vision, anaemia…

Every woman experiences periods differently.

Elite sportswomen I can absolutely understand how it can make the difference between their best and worst performances.

Some commenting could experience SOME idea of how it feels but I suspect they lack balls as well as uterus

Its not something we need to raise awareness of at all. We all know about it. What the female runner has called for is medical intervention and that if itnwas a male issue the solution would already exist.

Showing her incredible ignorance when it comes to testosterone production in men and how much it drops after 25 years old. Is it unfair because 22 year olds produce levels 35 year olds dont? Should we allow PEDS based on age and hormone levels?

Testosterone is prescribed with a Therapeutic Use Exemption certificate to many, many masters athletes across a huge spectrum of sports. Based on that I suspect it is also prescribed with a TUE in some cases for elite athletes.

I assume you mean "your" rather than youre?

No I'm not rambling in the slightest. You literally said "Ladies get a grip and get over yourselves"...

As for the other bit, I'll stand by what I said. There is a huge difference between something that effects an entire gender and something that effects a small percentage of a specific gender. Even then, I would suspect that there is more research and funding directed to ANY cancer than there is towards menstrual effects on women in sport (or in life in general).

You are obviously entitled to your opinion, just as everyone else is entitled to accept that you're wrong.

This is very true. And less importantly but significant in the context of the thread an equal lack of knowledge when it comes to how hard elite athletes train and how periods can impact on an elite athlete when training not just competing

I dont seek to polarise like you seek to... its not binary for me, theres a clear underlying issue you should resolve somewhere there.

I have empathy absolutely, im simply offering a wider view. Alternatively we could have an echo chamber of empathy which is insincerity personified.

I'm watching the European Championships on the telly at the moment. The women's high jump is being shown. When they showed the slo-mo reply of one lady's successful jump, it showed right into the gusset of her sports pants, as her legs went up and she did the backward roll type landing. If that lady had required a sanitary pad or something similar to deal with even normal menstrual bleeding, it'd have been all over international television. Heaven help any athlete dealing with leakage and the need to change pads, because competition can last a very long time and you can't exactly change your pad on the track/field, can you?

Exactly! I'm hoping to do a half iron man next year and I'm genuinely wondering what I'll do if I'm on my period. Pads chafe but tampons or cup can be uncomfortable and might need changing.

I wear Runderwear for when I play wheelchair sports (it gets very sweaty sat down ) but sanitary pads don't stick to the material!! So I have to go back to ordinary knickers and get soaking wet knickers, which when you're playing a tournament lasting all day is just grim (plus the drive home)

It's really hard!

Crotch shots are a little much ain't they?

Period v performance was never something I ever thought about in my younger days. I did swimming/gymnastics/rounders & netball. Luckily I never once suffered period pain, but the embarrassment of people being able to tell I was on my period was enough to stop me doing these things one week in four. But some of my friends were regularly in an awful state.

Definitely more research needed.

Maybe you dislike simple scientific facts, such as women being predisposed to having babies?

Maybe you don't like me suggesting refraining understanding of debilitating and adversity?

I dont know...

Suffice to say I say what I mean and not what you suggest.

Kindly don't am happy to clarify where you're triggered or confused.

P.s. on youre... if it was man issue we would of etc etc etc... thats bullshit by all means mail me I'd like to give you statistics and facts on the number of cancers currently killing men and the funding they recieve

How are male mortality cancer rates connected to this debate? That's some leap

Hi... you do realise someone advised if this was a man's problem we would be all over it.

I simply point out a situation where that's demonstrably not true.

When you've finished simping and can step off the bandwagon you may realise it. "

Did you just learn the word simp? You use it a lot

"Lots of awareness about this in sports like Tennis and Athletics. Some blaming their defeat on their period. Justified or is it time to just man up.

Cal

------

Your statement quite blatantly suggests that women should shut-up and accept it, and that they had no right to complain about the situation.

If this was a "man issue", men would have found a way to mitigate the issues decades ago.

Cal

You don't seem to be able to help yourself but to comment in a rather condescending way on any issue on the forums that relate to women. There is a lot of awareness about male cancers, I really don't understand your point.

That's great. Did you have an example of a woman blaming defeat on her period though? Be interested to see that.

Dina Asher-Smith has been talking about this recently. She explained how her period negatively affected her performance.

She didn't " blame her defeat on her period" though. I certainly didn't read it that way. I quoted what she said further up. She was asking for more research as was another member of the relay team.

Sorry - just read the entire thread. She wasn't blaming it on her period but I wondered if that was what Tom was referring to. But didn't explain it very well. Sorry!

So is that a no to any empathy for female athletes then?

I dont seek to polarise like you seek to... its not binary for me, theres a clear underlying issue you should resolve somewhere there.

I have empathy absolutely, im simply offering a wider view. Alternatively we could have an echo chamber of empathy which is insincerity personified.

"

You've shown no empathy here. That's why I asked. Happy for you to point out where I've tried to polarise the discussion.

"Its not something we need to raise awareness of at all.

Should we allow PEDS based on age and hormone levels?"

Sorry, whose ignorance? The female sprinters have asked for further research as far as I can see, not medical intervention? Could you clarify your comment please as I'm a bit lost!

"I'm watching the European Championships on the telly at the moment. "

Well there was a male sprinter trying to run and put his penis back in shorts recently...

Have you ever looked into the implant? It's not suitable for all women and some do have issues with it however it has been a game changer for me.

Really that's incredibly frustrating.

1. Point was made on 'if this was happening to men' it would be solved.

2. I dont agree and I offered an example of something men are exclusively affected by that is essentially ignored.

See men are 40 per cent more likely to die from cancer than women overall, and 16 per cent more likely to get the disease. So demonstrably 'we don't solve it because its men'.

I am at a loss to explain it further to you.

Nonetheless I have tried.

There is a lot of awareness in relation to male cancers the difference is a lot of men don't seek medical advice early enough. There are currently 3 high profile television campaigns getting more information to men and trying to get them to seek medical advice. Can you tell me of any campaigns at the moment raising awareness for women in sport who have difficulty in relation to their menstrual cycle?

Cal

Youre rambling cal, what's worse you're putting words in my mouth or willfully misinterpreting them... or potentially you just don't understand my position...

You don't seem to be able to help yourself but to comment in a rather condescending way on any issue on the forums that relate to women. There is a lot of awareness about male cancers, I really don't understand your point.

What don't you understand...

Is this another example of misandry ?"

Tom you have literally told women to man up and you have the nerve to suggest I'm promoting misansry!

I saw Dina Asher Smith's "rant" after her race yesterday, and I totally think that she's got a point. If it was a "man issue" there would have been much more research/time/money invested in trying to find an issue.

Your assessment would be completely accurate if we were to consider women to be nothing more than the baby making and maintaining machines that their biology facilitates.

Sorry!

Thank you.. the voice of reason.. "

What?! I'm not agreeing with you, Tom. I'm really glad that they're is more conversation about it in sports.

Explaining how menstruation can affect an athlete's performance is not 'blaming' or 'excusing'. It's educating and opening the conversation for other female athletes.

Just to clarify for some. Tom asked the question. Is it time to man up? Inviting debate. It was a question and not a statement.

Have you ever looked into the implant? It's not suitable for all women and some do have issues with it however it has been a game changer for me. "

Thank you. I've had one and it didn't help. I prefer not using hormones and just accepting that 5 days out of every month, there's no point in trying to get a PB

They are all answered.. I asked a question. Others answered it.. please read the OP first message..

Who has blind their defeat on their period Tom? How exactly do women man up?

Blind?"

I guess you are not going to answer the questions then Tom.

Sorry!

Thank you.. the voice of reason..

What?! I'm not agreeing with you, Tom. I'm really glad that they're is more conversation about it in sports.

Explaining how menstruation can affect an athlete's performance is not 'blaming' or 'excusing'. It's educating and opening the conversation for other female athletes. "

Ironically, that's exactly what Tom has done tonight. Some see it as an attack. The sensible see it as debate..

"I'm watching the European Championships on the telly at the moment. "

And this and the like are why as a teenager I gave up my athletic dreams despite being at elite level.

Too many training session embarrassing moments, too many hormonal meltdowns where I was too angry to remain on a competitive field of play.

I was high level at many sports and elite at athletics and gymnastics.

Bleeding for much longer than is normal and unable to leave the house for days on end, they screw up training schedules.

And being nearly 40 years ago even less understanding around with coaches and docs

Have you ever looked into the implant? It's not suitable for all women and some do have issues with it however it has been a game changer for me.

Thank you. I've had one and it didn't help. I prefer not using hormones and just accepting that 5 days out of every month, there's no point in trying to get a PB"

Yeah, my lifts dip massively when I have my period. We do reps at lighter weights during that week now.

"Just to clarify for some. Tom asked the question. Is it time to man up? Inviting debate. It was a question and not a statement.

And what do you, oh self appointed expert in many fields, think, Tom? "

I think.. not you again..

"Lots of awareness about this in sports like Tennis and Athletics. Some blaming their defeat on their period. Justified or is it time to just man up.

Cal

------

Your statement quite blatantly suggests that women should shut-up and accept it, and that they had no right to complain about the situation.

If this was a "man issue", men would have found a way to mitigate the issues decades ago.

Cal

Youre rambling cal, what's worse you're putting words in my mouth or willfully misinterpreting them... or potentially you just don't understand my position...

You don't seem to be able to help yourself but to comment in a rather condescending way on any issue on the forums that relate to women. There is a lot of awareness about male cancers, I really don't understand your point.

What don't you understand...

So essentially men are to blame because of youre application of a stereotype. Quite bigoted that...

I must admit you made me laugh by citing 'you' have seen adverts and now I must match it... how bizarre you cant use google.

But yes I have... personally in boxing and in football. Have a look on boxrox for example... but for me I have had a awareness of it since about 1996 when I trained with girls in various camps.

Nobody has actually said that men are to blame, only that due to the patriarchal hierarchy of research and development organisations, a problem that only effects (all) women is of significantly lower priority than a problem which impacts men.
