Went to see a friend yesterday to congratulate her son on A level results.

Hes studing architecture at Uni and she mentioned this Saudi place called Neom that he might go to, I never heard of it before.

Now this place called Neom appears on my Twitter feed this morning while scrolling.

There must be some kind of listening software working 24/7 on my phone.

As part of the tracking cookies on websites targeted ads show you things you might be interested in, there's a high chance your friend went onto that website and you phone picked up on that so figured as you're friends you might share the same interests so you're phone pushes the ad

If you have a smartphone with voice activated assistant (eg Siri on iPhone) then your phone is always listening for your voice, pure and simple. So when I’m talking to my friend about my car needing new front tyres, and the next day I start getting adverts in my feed for tyre fitting? I mean, it could be coincidence.

"I mean, it could be coincidence."

Pretty sure it's no coincidence. I have three Google Hubs and three android phones all with Google Assistant. All switched on and listening. I don't have to trigger her ("ok Google") and I get feeds (YouTube) or adverts based on chit chats I've had.

There was one time we were watching James Bond and the actor said "I just killed a man", the lights on my Google Hub lit up!

There have been iPhone security issues, where hackers can take control of everything your phone can do.

There's a security fix available for download. It probably wasn't this for OP but it's good to keep ourselves protected

If Alexa and her mates aren't constantly listening how do they know when you're speaking to them?

Of course they are listening all the time, otherwise how would Alexa hear you say 'Alexa'

There won't be any need for your neighbours to report you for using your hosepipe soon. Your phone will do that

You device collects voice calls and records them it's in Google I've known for years apparently you were able to listen to them not all but some it's all down to opting in or out you don't realise what you've consented to but minutes you use voice notes you've activated it given permission then you need to opt out and reset

"As part of the tracking cookies on websites targeted ads show you things you might be interested in, there's a high chance your friend went onto that website and you phone picked up on that so figured as you're friends you might share the same interests so you're phone pushes the ad"

THIS

Your phone knows your friend's phones and who you spend the most time with. Their phone shares their data with your phone and your phone sends you targeted ads based on their phones data.

Your devices are not actually listening, but they are processing and sharing search histories and interests.

Now if someone could tell me how to stop getting glazing firms to target me because my Mum needs new windows, that would be great.

It only happens when you have given consent to share with another person this could be without the other person consent as well but the person doing it has acted

That's why it's always good to break the connection afterwards or not do it at all. That's why it's always important to be able to manage cookies even though just to be able to use whatever it is then delete cookies for it and history any memory of its existence

Yes they are listening!! But very unlikely not in the sense there's a human allotted to you. More so they're just tracking absolutely everything you do on your phone. And it wouldn't surprise me if they pick up on certain phrases etc too which triggers ads sometimes. You don't have any privacy with a phone.

That's why it's also important to turn off your location it's no bodies business.including any other apps that track but downside if you lose your device you are unable to track it

Bottom line is it's not a criminal offence if you have given permission/consented

Does anyone actually believe that denying consent actually stops it? Or us it just a switch that helps you feel better?

I've had this loads of times. When I had a Facebook profile , I didn't have the app and messenger on my phone but one instance that was most obvious was when on the phone to a friend, who did have these apps enabled, she spoke about a topic that I/we had never spoken about or shown interest in before, and the next day, an advert for a book on that topic showed up in my news feed.

That really pissed me off, that even if I don't have these apps, 'they' can still make a profile of me by my associations with people who have them

Fun thing to try is talking about something random a lot, and seeing if it turns up in your adverts or suggestions. Probably why we keep seeing double ended dildo adverts all the time

"Which why i decline all cookies and don't use any apps other than telegram and whats app"

But internet carries data from your software so it's able to see everything that you've used via internet leaving the door wide open only blockers would stop this but you won't be able to use anything that is going to need internet information is more valuable than currency
