Is there any point unless you've worn the original ones out?

Yes if you love them and are still committed and you both agree.

Yep, times change, things move on and it's a chance to celebrate with new people in your life or in a manner you really wanted

Does anyone actually just 'renew' them and use the identical, original ones?

Because the only times I've ever seen it happen it's been world's apart from the original ceremony content.

Almost as if 'something' had changed and there was a need for some kind of PR exercise.

Cynical maybe, but............

Cynical is thinking that the whole concept of marriage is outdated and is now just a really expensive legally binding contract with a tagged on and unnecessary celebration

Not something a would do. A vow once made, doesn't need renewing in my opinion.

If other people want to do it I'm not particularly bothered

No,we're married but don't think we would ever renew our vows. I have some great memories of my wedding day,and I'm happy with those!
