Is anyone else into feeding the garden birds or am I the only nutcase on the site?

My desk is in front of a window and I love to sit and watch all the different birds coming and going, (I might have to rethink the desk as I'm getting very little work done!)

Nope, we love to. I am going to repair my Mum's old bird table soon and put it up in the garden. She would love to know that I'm still using it, and it will remind me of her.

Think it would be rather irresponsible of us to feed the birds. We have 2 cats, the neighbours behind us have 2 cats, the ones to the left have 1 cat and a couple of neighbours a few doors down have 1 cat each (7 cats that we know of all in a couple of hundred metres of each other)

Think it'd be more a case of us feeding the cats

I have a fat ball feeder (ahem) hanging from a branch on a tree just outside my bedroom window. It's lovely watching the sparrows and blue tits eating from it.

A big container of 50 from pets at home is about £6 or so, so it's not the most expensive thing to do to help the poor lads out in cold months :o)

Ah yes, Cyril the Squirrel is a cunning chap. I used to buy all sorts of devices to stop him nicking the bird food but no luck - he found a way to beat every test!

I've found the best way is to hang the feeder at the tip end of a pretty thin branch, they simply can't get to it then as the branch won't support their weight.

I have five cats, and there are quite a few more in our Close, but it doesn't stop me from feeding the birds. I string peanuts onto a piece of cotton and chuck it up into the tall bushes....the sparrows, finches and tit's love them. I save all the fat from my grill, roasting tins and frying pan and when I've got stale bread it gets chopped up and put in a pan with the saved fat...the starlings, blackbirds and collared dove go for this and also pieces of apple. I have a bird table and bird bath in the middle of the lawn so the birds are well able to see any cats (mine or otherwise) who are on the prowl. The only time the cats seem to catch birds is in the spring and summer when there are fledglings about. I hate it....but I suppose it's the nature of cats.

I have all those too, I'm becoming a bird stalker lol, trying different foods to attract different birds, my latest achievements are three goldfinches who love the newly added Niger seed feeder.

I have a squirrel box for the lunatic squirrels, which I fill with nuts seeds, bread, stale biscuits, stale cereal etc. The box has a clear front and a lift up lid so the squirrel has to lift the lid to get at the food, it's hilarious to watch, worth ever penny

I have one of these, it's great, but I have found that the finches are only interested if I put sunflower seeds in it, When the light is fading, late afternoon and I have the light on my desk they still come and take the seeds from the feeder, they must be able to see me working (well watching them!) on the other side of the glass but it doesn't seem to bother them...

Try fatballs with chilli in them - the birds can't taste it and it doesn't affect them, but the squirrels won't touch them because of the chilli. Should be available from most garden centres and pet stores, as well as son supermarkets.

I painted my wooden bird table with hot chilli sauce to deter our fury friends, as you say it doesn't bother the brids, it kept the squirrels away for about two weeks until the rain washed it off

Wonderful birds to see. We live within a stone's throw of both a canal and a river, and we always seem them.

some crushed nuts mixed with melted bacon fat, left to go solid, and put in a 6 inch tube, capped so they can only peck at one end. Got 6 hanging from my tree's front and back.

We feed the birds too.

The children love watching them through the lounge window.

We have a family of Robins that appear each year bringing that years babies.

We have blue tits, coal tits etc.

We have even had the back garden turn green when the Ring necks found next doors Apple tree

We also have pussy cats but they never seem interested in the birds....

Mice as presents is another thing

I've not been feeding the birds as often as I usually do, need to make more of an effort, I usually have a variety of seeds, nuts and fat blocks out for them, just struggled with the up keep of my garden this year and its not been safe to venture into the jungle.

The birds aren't phased about my cats and dont have many fatalities, but mice, voles and shrews are a different matter!
