Best European city to live in if you only speak English...

Orpington

What would you say is the best (and most linguistically convenient) European city (outside the UK) to live in if you only speak the English language (and you don't want to learn another language)

Disclaimer...this is just a general question, I'm not asking for myself...I'm not even British, and I speak multiple languages, before any of you start ranting about " if you move to another country, you should learn to speak the language....meh meh meh"

The biggest benefit isn’t the language, it’s the Guinness

Liverpool

The overall best standard of English would be in Scandinavia or Holland so Copenhagen or Amsterdam would fit the bill.

But in terms of ability to just get by with English, pretty any major European city is fine. Berlin would certainly be on my list.

Most of NL speaks English as a second language. Though speaking Dutch is considered as an advantage.

Most Scandinavian countries speak excellent English as does most of Germany.

If you prefer warmer the south of France.

I live in Brussels, given its multicultural but the majority don't speak the language. All official work is done in French or Dutch. Though not impossible but it's difficult to speak only English

This. English isn't always spoken in towns away from the main tourist trail, as we know very well.

Tallin is an awesome city, absolutely loved it, went for the christmas market in the old town and had a great time, great people, great food. It was great! Have I used the word great enough?

Its a great question but the answer lies away from language as, as others have said, most inhabitants of major European cities (certainly born after 1970) all speak perfect English. Also living in country that speaks another language most people tend to be semi to fully fluent in around 6 months anyway.

So language, as fascinating as it is, is not the barrier so frees you up to consider things like climate, coastal or land-locked and standard of living etc...

To try and answer the question though I'd say Gibraltar. Its basically a mini England but with a southern Spanish climate so job done. And YES ok it is part of the UK but is far enough away to class as an answer
