As much as they’re not the best horrors, I grew up with the teen slasher films so I’d probably have to go for A Nightmare on Elm Street.

I really liked the 3rd film in the _rilogy that the OP mentioned, "day of the dead"..which came after "dawn"..

There's a real bleakness to "day of the dead"..and sense of dread that I really like.

American werewolf in London has been mentioned, I also think that's a classic.

There's an old black and white film, called "carnival of souls" that I can recommend. Its clever and quite ahead of its time and really creepy.

Some modern horror films ive liked have been "howl" -british werewolf film set on a train that breaks down in the middle of nowhere (I think its meant to be somewhere in scotland)..and "it follows"..which I thought was quite an interesting story and original.

(I think certain sci films can cross over to the horror genre. There's a bunch of them I like too.)

Who here remembers Warlock?

For those who haven't, it was about a 17th century evil warlock is sent by the Devil to the present day (the late 1980s) to find his Bible (known as the Grand Grimoir) that has the power to destroy all of creation and it's up to a 17th century witch hunter and his present day companion to stop him.

"Yes agree the conjuring is the best of the recent horror movies. Also It Follows.

My favourite classic is probably John Carpenter's The Thing.

I do have a spot for Nightmare on Elm st and Scream.

And the shining.

The Shining is a great horror but just pipped by Halloween.

Have you seen the sequel to The Shining, Dr Sleep? I was surprised how good this movie was

No, didn’t know there was a sequel.

What’s your thoughts on The Omen and The Exorcist?

Doctor Sleep, came out in 2019, it’s on Netflix. I think the Omen and The Exorcist are great. Both have a great premise. The 1970s horror films are creepy "

Dr Sleep was fantastic, one of the best films I've seen in years

"Who here remembers Warlock?

For those who haven't, it was about a 17th century evil warlock is sent by the Devil to the present day (the late 1980s) to find his Bible (known as the Grand Grimoir) that has the power to destroy all of creation and it's up to a 17th century witch hunter and his present day companion to stop him.

I know which movie you mean. I don’t think I’ve seen it - I will try seek it out "

It's definitely worth a watch. It's kind of like The Terminator but with witchcraft.

Oh yes indeed; I’m a big fan of Italian cinema from the 1970’s/80’s era. Bava, Argento, Deodato, Lenzi, Mattei, Margheriti etc.

Often cited in a derogatory manner from some cinematic purists as ‘B’ movies, but they were invariably incredibly fun to sit through and always moved at a cracking pace

Hereditary

Just one of the creepiest and most disturbing films I've ever seen. Gen Z's The Exorcist, as one reviewer put it. And Toni Collette is brilliant, as always.

Paranormal Activity

Another creepy masterpiece.

The Mist

Great Stephen King 50s-style monster movie with an ending that, for sheer gut renching horror, outstrips King's original novella by miles.

Train to Busan

Dawn of the Dead (2004 remake)

Zombieland 1 & 2

Brilliant zombie films. Why the 2004 DotD? Better story, sprinting zombies and a kick-ass intro perfectly scored by Johnny Cash's "When The Man Comes Around", which just by itself is worth repeated watches on YouTube (Watch the intro now. Trust me, you'll love it.)

Kill List

A deeply creepy Brit horror, with a bizarre storyline and horribly realistic violence and torture. So uniquely strange and creepy it's hard to describe. It's on Film4 this Friday night, if you fancy checking it out. But be warned, it is disturbing and there are upsetting scenes involving animals.

Honourable mentions:

Ginger Snaps (the art project opening credits!)

REC

Raw

Night of the Demon (1957)

The Devil Rides Out

The Innocents (1961)

The Haunting (1963)

The Witch

Hammer Horror Films, the majority of them anyway. I like the technicolour they scream colour at you, costumes, overacting, Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, Peter Cushing even a young Roy Castle shows up in one film.

I particularly like the late 60s to late 70’s films as the ladies were very sexy and costumes.

I don’t think I’ve ever watched one and turned it off halfway through.

Sorry you asked for a film I give you a studio full of them.

I really like 1970s horror, often no to little special effects just a great premise and great filmmaking. I have seen bits and pieces of the Hammer horror movies - I need to watch more of them

Most of these are not actually horror movies. Gore, violence and sadism yes. You can't beat the original universal monster movies for pure pathos and horror. Remember these were in the 1930s. X

Nice- I love these. John Carpenter is one of my favourite directors, I also like They Live and Prince of Darkness

Horror films have never appealed to me; I have never once gone to see a horror movie in a cinema, nor would I ever watch any of the current crop being broadcast on TPTV, most of which seem to feature the British actor, Peter Cushing.

I prefer films with a romantic theme, but not slushy romantism, like the film, Love Story, starring Ali McGraw!

"Exorcist !!"

A truly horrific picture: best avoided.
