People in Waldorf Germany are going to be fined heftily if they allow their cats to roam the neighbourhood. The main reason is the harm they do to birds......

I'd love this here. Just to keep cats out of my garden, though i've always accepted their right to roam.

What's going on folks ? It's all over yesterdays news ( in Tom's voice )

Would you like cats to be indoor only ??

My cat is about 17 years old. She spends 90% of the time sleeping. There's no way she would be able to catch a bird.

In this weather she likes to be outside and I'm not going to stop her.

I wouldn't get another cat I'd hate to have a litter tray in the house and although some are house cats most of them like to be outside. God knows how our cat would react to suddenly having to be inside all the time.

They do tend to decimate the wildlife.

I wonder if a difference is made in that area. If so perhaps a wider ban could be in the offing.

It is to protect the crested lark in its nesting season. Cats are to be kept indoors for three months for the next three years.

I couldn't keep my cat indoors. If I opened the door or window he would dash out

I agree to a large extent though I've always been a pet owner.

What's your reasoning ?

Since the lockdowns, the cat population here has increased exponentially and they all seem to congregate in our garden. We don't have pets but there's cat shit all over our garden and it's disgusting. If there was any safe way to properly stop cats coming into our garden, I'd deploy it. They're fecking annoying.

No orange goes wasted in my house. If they are bit beyond eating I chop them smallish an sprinkle them peel n all behind the bushes. Cats hate it.

Get a Lurcher and a Mastiff. They ensure my garden is cat free.

I think cats are selfish pets. I want a pet so my neighbours will have to just accept ripped open bin bags/cat shit all over the garden. Then of course there is the wildlife. Like with so many things, people are incapable of scaling up what appears to them to be a minor issue. They see the odd bird their cat brings in and think it's a tiny problem. The reality is an estimated 275 million creatures killed every year - 55 million of them are birds.

Interestingly the RSPB quotes the same study but bizzarely only mentions the numbers killed in spring and summer thus more than halving the figures. They also talk of growth in blue tit populations despite the predation and offer a mild suggestion that some harm may be caused. The impression is very much that they're well aware of the demographic that funds them and would rather keep the cash coming in than be honest. More than half the songbird species in the UK are either in decline or listed as threatened species. Its hard to see how 27 million birds every spring and summer, as they quote, never mind the actual yearly figure of 55 million can possibly not play a part in this.

I fully accept there can be irresponsible dog owners but house cats aside, owning a cat by definition is being an irresponsible pet owner. No one would consider letting their dog wander through someone's garden, rip open their bin bags and crap all over as anything other than anti social yet getting a cat knowing full well this is exactly what it will do is socially acceptable.

Mr"

We can have five or six neighbourhood cats in our garden at once. All pooing and digging and fornicating (because people don't get them neutered) and fighting etc. Honestly? I'm sick of it.

Local Facebook pages are full of "my cat is missing" posts but hardly any of the animals that sit staring through our patio doors have collars etc.

I do think people get cats without thinking carefully and don't always take responsibility for them.

Yeah, 'cos no dog owner ever would let their dog shit in the park where children and others are playing and relaxing, and then not clean it up!

No, my cats love being outside, it would be more cruel to keep them in. They don't often catch birds, it's more mice, which no one has a problem with.

I'd rather not have to leave bits of crap around my garden!! If people's pet dogs or llamas or horses were shagging on my patio at 1am and leaving faeces everywhere, I'm sure I'd be allowed to take some action via the dog warden or RSPCA or something. Why is it okay for cats to just roam everywhere with impunity?

I like cats as animals, I have nothing against the animal themselves, but the sheer numbers now are ridiculous. I cannot cover my entire garden boundary in tea bags and lemon peel either! Next doors 3x cats jump the fence and try to jump through our living room window. The fence is probably 20m long (shared with next door) and there's a similar length of hedge on the other side of the garden that cats can climb through, depending on size. The back fence is probably 10m long.

We are restricted by local covenants as to how high our fences can be and what they are made from.

April 1st until August 31st is 5 months!!! .

The lockdown has been lifted 2 weeks early this year but it is to be repeated until 2025 in the hope the lark has been able to increase its own population size.
