I'd class myself as a massive enthusiast and obsessive. I've got 3 external hard drives full of it. It's all I get up to behind my Mrs's back it's insane.

I'll think nothing of spending 4 hours having a massive long edging wank session when I get the free time.

It's not for me, I really don't like porn, I don't watch it myself and I avoid meeting those who watch it a lot.

I used to like porn -- at one point in my life I even sold it for a living.

But, it's a waste of life and time -- it messes with the reward centres of your brain and it can warp your sexual tastes.

Been there

Have more external HDDs full of the stuff

Spent many many many many hours downloading it but never watched it.

It can become unhealthy if it starts to affect your quality of life, your relationship with your partner, friends and family.

It can become an addiction, and lead to unhealthy attitudes towards sex.

In the end I just stopped. I recognised it wasn’t good for me. Now a days the only porn I watch is the stuff I film myself

Who didn't watch loads of 'Frankie Vaughan' when they first got access to the Internet, to add a little context, for me that was around 1999 or so ? And for those of you old enough to remember, in those days it was dial up Internet....man, was it slow, slow.

Then broadband arrived and yeah, it was like a portal to a new world.

Like the OP I also have a massive collection and I feel I have to watch at least a little porn daily otherwise I feel that a "junkie" needing a fix.

Got addicted to it and needed to watch it everyday. Realised that it was affecting my sex life and took alot of effort to stop watching it. Even now do get the odd urge to watch but just go and do something else, even if it's not sex related.

Would just say to OP try and see how long can go without it and if find you can't then do think help is needed.

I think something becoming habitual- you watch porn every morning before you have a shower- is different to it being an addiction. I think when porn becomes addictive- you find yourself being late for work or appointments because you’re watching it or you find yourself getting into debt or financial problems watching it and can’t stop- then you need to seek help.

I truly believe that having a positive attitude to sex means that it’s ok to do things regularly, even everyday, if it brings you joy and it is done safely. For example, if you had sex with your partner everyday because you are horny, that’s not a problem. So why is watching porn? You have a scroll of twitter everyday before your shower, that’s not a problem, so why is watching porn?

I think breaking habits that you dislike is important and will be difficult but I also consider them not the same as an addiction or an unhealthy relationship.

Whenever I see statements like this I always wonder about the personality behind them and the cookies/algorithms on their devices. When I open up a porn page it may contain some videos like this but it most certainly isn't mostly this type. A great deal of it will ostensibly be "real" scenario's.

Or maybe I am biased in what I choose to watch and ignore more of this type than I realise

To be fair I don’t dispute this. I have done very little reading on it and I’m not any aware of psychology really.

I still believe that there’s a difference between habitual consumption and addiction, with anything. But accept that habitual consumption can still be problematic as you said in reply. Though I think it’s also based on the assumption that people are unethically consuming unethical, mass produced porn, which I don’t think people should be consuming anyway.

Regardless of any research - for myself, I steer wide of porn nearly all the time. I prefer to use my imagination or read erotica because porn has some unhealthy effects on me. I want to view more and get further into it. I start seeking stuff out that I'd never want in real life. I don't have a lid on it - and in every other respect I do keep a lid on my needs. Or I'd be posting statuses about "horn".

That's also just one study and meta analysis, there are plenty more out there that suggest similar outcomes.

You can fight for porn all you like but the truth is, a high quantity of it does not respect women as equal sexual partners and still creates a sexual fantasy through the male gaze.

And that isnt even tackling the main issues of how problematic and dangerous free porn sites are re r@pe videos, assault videos, human trafficking etc

True. Definitely agree the impact it can and does have on men and their attitudes to women and sex. Ethical porn is better for those things although I still think there’s issues that those content creators reproduce also. But people are consuming porn more ethically I reckon today than maybe 10 years ago. So hopeful it gets better

I'm curious, do you genuinely believe that porn is responsible for this? That 25 years ago before internet porn became common men were all respectful of women?

My view is going to be subjective and influenced by my life experience but I've worked in an almost exclusively male environment for roughly that time and if there's been any change in men's attitudes to women during that time it's for the better. As late as my mid 20's there would be naked calenders in most workshops these are long gone, as are the Nuts and Zoo magazines that were ubiquitous canteen reading material. The crude objectification of women had genuinely decreased in my experience.p

As Damselfly says above, porn can certainly lead people into a dark world but the truth is that this isn't everyone. Those that it does already have this in them. I certainly wouldn't argue that for such people the availability of violent/illegal/degrading/bad word of your choice porn doesn't normalise stuff that shouldn't be normalised. I think the problem is when we start claiming that because such individuals exist the problem is the porn not them, that porn has this effect on everyone or that such personalities didn't exist pre internet porn is dangerous and short sighted.

No not saying it's happening en Masse at all, and like the studies suggest, there needs to be a predisposition to that type of opinion about women to begin with.

If we are talking teenagers viewing that type of material that is inherently degrading to women from a young age (mainly mainstream) then that is creating a predisposition for viewing women a certain way imo.

But like all consumable media, this type of attitude leaks into it all so it's not just porn either like

Personally ( I'm not a professional) I think there's an element to porn, which portrays the women as desiring sex and pleasure and as you put it " done to them".

It's intriguing to see how many men desire a liberated woman , yet feel a little awkward when they're confronted by one.

I suppose porn has fulfilled a purpose for many, but its not always for sexual release ?

Too much reliance on anything can't be good, but fir some it adds ideas and fantasy, even if some turn out to be rather naff for real.

I've lived in the UK for nearly 30 years and I don't see any improvement in general misogyny. Calendars on walls are the public face of what is an insidious problem. And that to me is the issue with misogyny - it's built into our society. Like racism. Porn isn't responsible - but mainstream porn is one thing that perpetuates it and has a huge impact on the attitudes of young people.

Whenever I see statements like this I always wonder about the personality behind them and the cookies/algorithms on their devices. When I open up a porn page it may contain some videos like this but it most certainly isn't mostly this type. A great deal of it will ostensibly be "real" scenario's.
