I had coffee in a Costa near Portsmouth today. We sat at a table next to two rather lovely looking bikers of a similar age to me...one of them made eye contact, smiled a few times & I was aware that he was giving me sneaky side glances. They got up to leave before us- I instigated a conversation by making a joke & we chatted for a moment before they said goodbye & left.

I wish I had the guts to have asked for a number...After all, I had nothing to lose!

How many other women just let these chances pass them by because it's ingrained in them that men should make the first move? Who is actually brave enough to put themselves out there & risk the knock backs??

Well OP, the moral of the story appears to be .. ladies, make that first move!

And with that in mind, my inbox is currently wide open and craving attention. Just sayin’

I'm recently out of a 22 year relationship & I'm now 49. I don't really know what is acceptable & don't want to look desperate because if I find a guy attractive, I automatically think he's out of my league

Op. When did it change for the man to make the first move.

Remember when a woman would drop a handkerchief? The man would pick it up ‘is this yours maam? Etc.

I’d be flattered for a woman to make it clear she liked me by making moves. But alas…. I’m on Fab ..

I would have done the same tbh. I've never made the first move on a guy x

This is why I like how Americans go about it and just ask for a date. Not a care if knocked back but always seems to be an exchange of numbers at at least for that little confidence boost.

We Brit’s clearly take the word ‘date’ too seriously.

OP I have the opposite problem! I'm so over making the first move! There's probably something in this about being too much in our masculine/feminine. I should learn to lean back for a change and you my girl should seize the opportunity next time!

"If a guy is interested, he will make the first move "

That’s not always technically true. I’ve fancied people before and not approached them because I either wasn’t sure if they were interested or just plain an simple bottled it

When I was younger maybe I wouldn't have but, now if I was really drawn to someone, I would.

I had a friend who was taken by the look of a guy on the opposite table in a restaurant. She liked that guy but wouldn't approach him so I wrote her number down, I had a word and passed the number to him.

They dated for a while which was nice.

The one time I did I got knocked back. I don’t like rejection so don’t tend to make the first move, but if they show they are interested I’m not afraid to show that I am too.

Tbh they were both very attractive to me, so if either had approached me, I'd have been made up! There was a little thought in the back of my brain that was imagining me in between both of them!

I personally wouldn’t have the balls. I mean to be fair I don’t get a side glance or a smile so I definitely wouldn’t risk the rejection

You may come across them again at some point, be brave, what have you got to lose

If he's out of your league it's because he is in a lower league. You look lovely.

Similar - don’t want to be that guy / pest and don’t have confidence in that area to approach someone.

Did it once last year after a few weeks of both of us checking each other out on walks. First time since my teens and thought now or never. Started small talk, established interest, deep breath and asked her.

Nothing … I’m at a loss with dating / meeting people sometimes
