So women and children first !

So in these days of equality should this still be the case?

It's telling, though, that on aircraft the less abled are kept furthest from the emergency exits, and it's a matter of put your own oxygen mask on first

The Italian liner that overturned recently proved that the 'women & children first' rule is no longer upheld. People were fleeing for their lives to get off that ship and it appears the crew abandoned ship long before all the passengers got off, including the Captain.

to be fair, I think the reasoning on airlines is more about ensuring that the person by the emergency exits is fit enough to be able to get up and open the doors etc. if necessary - i.e. avoid a potential bottleneck - rather than trying to make sure less able passengers are last to the doors!

An aircraft can be a very difficult place to evacuate from with it's narrow aisles and most likely it's internal lighting out of action. A disabled person would create a serious obstacle for others to get across/move and could well lead to more deaths than would have occurred had they been sitting further from the exits.

It sounds cruel I know, but you have to adopt a practice that is for the greater good for all and gives the maximum chance of survival to as many people as possible.

I know

Hearing of the "greater good" just reminds me of the neighbourhood watch in Hot Fuzz

humm im unsure about this

its a difficult one

but to me someone who is say 21 has their whole life ahead of them so makes more sence for them to get a palce rather than a 80 year old

i know that sounds cruel but just seems ligical to me

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I love watching the emergency exit modelling. It all works great on the computer and then real people go and panic and ruin it all.

There is evidence that an impediment to seemingly slow people down has the effect of speeding up the exit flow as people can't block the exit and have to merge.

I would try and help the people that need help and then go last. I can swim, I have no dependents and I'm not that handy. I could organise everything but I'd be useless building a raft.

I will openly admit that i would put me and mine first. That does not mean that i would not help others, or that i would attempt to hinder others.

But, if i was given the choice to save a strangers child or a frail elderly person, or to save a member of my own family, then my own win every time.

That may get me called selfish, but i prefer to term it honest.

I think most people would like to think they would act in an unselfish manner and help those who need it but in reality until you are put in a real situation none of us truely know how we would respond, even those who have had the training to handle those kind of situations.
