This is undeliverable it’s literally 1/2 or 2/3 the price of Sainsburys or Morrisons on most things.

Basil and Coriander in pots are 67p, bananas are 57p per kilo, Mangos are 59p 340g of peanut butter is £1.09., cucumbers are 59p, packets of smoked mackerel 1.59. These prices haven’t moved in 10-20 years.

What is going on here ?

Why isn’t this all over the news ?

If I shopped here properly I could feed a family of 4 healthy food on £10-15 a week

Their own brand stuff is really decent. I swear by their Thai curry kits. Half the price of the leading brand ones.

I didn’t look at much pre packed stuff but I would check and compare the levels of salt and sugar before buying anything like that - tasty stuff is often tasty for the wrong reasons

It’s literally just Thai paste, coconut milk and herbs and spices so no worse than making it yourself. It just comes packaged as a kit.

A family of four for £10 a week? I spend more than £10 a week on fruit and I shop at Lidl. Yes it's much cheaper, but let's not get carried away.

No I’ve driven past them for years and been in the odd time for wet suits, ski googles and a one lam tunnel tent……and tbh it wasn’t the best shopping experience, no self checkouts and not much space in the aisles to perve etc but I was very impressed by the prices and they have all the basics for cooking, just less choice .

The only things I won't buy there are bread, flour, cat food and cereal.

I think you might be on to something with this HN.

Maybe you should do a blog showing folk how to cook from scratch from Aldi, it's not been done before and would be very popular come Winter.

They are far too quick..

We used both Aldi and Lidl some 38 years ago when we in Germany, it took them ages to follow us back home..

Let's not get into diet choices. I've four teens and they eat fruit. And £10 is not going to pay for a family of four's meals.

Not been to Aldi for ages, always liked their chocolate. I like the random stuff you can find there. I shop at Morrisons to be fair and I find it kind of evens out because some stuff is cheaper at Morrisons and vice versa. For me I can't be doing with going to several supermarkets for stuff, easier to go to Morrisons, it's right opposite work as well

Beware of the other supermarket “price matches” to Aldi and Lidl. Where the latter two’s own brand stuff is very good quality, the others’ price matched is their cheapo poorer quality product.

I will go there more now because prices at the big ones have gone up so much and they have most of what I need. There used to be this perception the choice was hit and miss and you needed a big supermarket to cook but since Asda was sold they are reducing lines anyway, Tesco is crap - everything is packaging & £100 or 20p with a club card, Sainsbury's & Morrisons are just too over priced.

I didn’t look at flour or oils tbh , I’m very fussy on that stuff. I did note they don’t do any wholewheat pasta, but then Asda only has one type now, Sainsbury’s or specialist shops are needed for a few things.

Quite near Bath usually

If you like cooking from scratch all the above is spot on.

It's so cheap for fresh veg, fruit, cheese etc. Have lots of vegan options too. Wine is very good and sensible prices too!

Easily the best place to shop in these times.

My one gripe (autocorrected from grope!) is that organic/free range meats aren't available (at my local stores anyway). So I pay at Waitrose/Ocado for that and save on everything else. I cook 75% veggie meals as my partner is veggie anyway so no major expense.

I disagree , the mango, banana and avocado is fine, the potted herbs are all good. I know about graded meat and it’s mostly presentation not quality , meat is reared and butchered to the sane standards. Salt and sugar mostly affects food I wouldn’t buy anyway

I did notice that no organic or vegan , but I guess the target market aren’t vegan or overly conscious of impact , they compete on price not choice, with 13% inflation it’s perfect timing for that strategy

I think a clue is that Tesco and Sainsbury boast that they match 'some' items to Aldi prices.

What we pay for in the larger supermarkets is choice and service eg one person in front at the checkout.

I'm finding your narrative here pretty hard to take. You don't shop for a family of four (or more) by your own admission. And likely haven't done for some years as your kids are adults as you've said elsewhere. Yet you've made up a ludicrous figure that anyone could afford to feed a family for £10-15 a week. And suggested the family might lose some weight whilst they're at it. My kids don't need to lose weight thanks.

You have a very good standard of living as you've also commented on other threads. You don't need to shop at Aldi. So it's a bit condescending to be saying what a family should eat and how much a shop should cost. Almost like a Tory MP.

"This is undeliverable it’s literally 1/2 or 2/3 the price of Sainsburys or Morrisons on most things.

10-15 quid a week for 4 seriously??

It's the old "five meals from one chicken" type of cooking from scratch. "

Having been a cook l my adult life and frugal when it comes to cooking for family over the years I've done the chicken thing! But no way could u feed 4 for 15 a week! Lol x

There was a documentary a while back that basically said the farms on the packaging don't actually exist. They get it from multiple farms around the UK and Ireland which supply a few different supermarket chains.

I am lucky. Within max seven miles driving . Farthest in order away

Sainsbury superstore

Tesco superstore

Asda superstore

Morrisons superstore

Aldi

Lidl

I do my shopping at Asda. Mainly due to Morrisons being dearer , Lidl and Aldi not having all I want. Do not want to waste fuel driving around to find which store has products I buy the cheapest.

Also a few of their copied products (crisps, biscuits, drinks) are made in the same factories as the branded versions.

Lidl is closer but it's always so full of people in the summer!

I prefer Aldi but our local Lidl has self checkouts so it’s a toss up between the two for me. Aldi queuing system is a joke.

Self checkout is a bit advanced for us here in the back of beyond's far away twin town... "

The cheap supermarket ratings came out recently (Lidl wins), which leads the broadsheets to write a comparison piece and present stories of Tarquin and Jocasta choosing to save money by buying some things there but keeping their labled things from Waitrose or M&S.

Personally, I'd buy Lidl's sourdough (approx £1.25-£3 cheaper than others), their free range organic chicken and for lobsters, but not most of their fruit and veg. Aldi for things like condiments. some chocolate and alcohol. M&S for chocolate éclairs, Waitrose for my fruit and veg, fish and meat. Sainsburys for my laundry detergent.

"The only negative I find with Aldi is the fruit and veg go off quicker than other supermarkets but I just buy it when I actually need it."

That's because it's mainly unrefrigerated and when it's delivered, it often sits on pallets (unrefrigerated) waiting for the over worked staff to put it on the shelves.

Source: my brother was a deputy manager at Aldi for a few years.

I avoid fresh meat in Aldi for the aforementioned sitting on unrefrigerated pallets reason. I have reason to suspect that the cold chain is broken far too often!

I usually only buy the large packs of chicken breast. Aldi near me is next door to the gym so they sell out and restock regularly. I’ve had the steaks once or twice and they were probably better than Asda.

They make those stories up. I actually use a few shops - Asda for most things , Morrisons if I run out and the 6:30 daily sales, independents for mutton & some veg and TX Max for Italian imports but I only spend maybe 200 a month on food anyway but for most people that work and commute daily and arent foodies it doesn’t make sense to spend hours each week and add extra costs of petrol and parking.

There is two main reasons that Lidl and Aldi are cheaper.

One is that both are present in 30+ countries. For that simple reason they can buy in bulk and get better deals from factories and farms.

The second one is that staff is expected to be 100% flexible. You have to work till, bakery, fresh fruit, work stock, organise the warehouse, etc... When you have to work till you are expected to scan on average, if not wrong 25 items per minute.

Plus they don't really care about presentation what probably saves a lot of money as well.

One last thing for the people that claim most things are from lower quality. I work in one of this chains when I was younger and lost count of the amount of times that we got meat, vegetables and other items with (Morrisons, waitrose, etc) package's in the same pallets with lidl products. Now lidl doesn't share warehouses with other supermarkets. What means that the products got mix in the factories...

I stop having them when I saw people picking them with their hands and even squeezing them and leaving them. Once I mentioned to staff that there were no tongues to pick them with and looked at me on a sort of vacant manner. Tbf I don't buy anything like that anymore anywhere that is exposed to the filthy habits of some people or even dust, flies etc. I have no idea why they dont cover the baskets. The lidl shops in Germany do, where of course it all came from.

Aldi shops are all the same at the back, little refrigeration in the store rooms. Because staff have to do every type of job, someone might be part way through putting stuff on a shelf but then called to do checkout and it gets left on the shop floor. They run on bare minimum staffing. It's obvious that the fruit and veg isn't refrigerated by the fact much of it is set out in the middle of aisles without the refrigeration unit! That's why the fruit and veg doesn't last.

But that’s not what I was saying. The budget own brand of supermarkets is what they are using for price match. Instead of their mid price own brand, which is likely to be more closely matched to the discounters’ product

You dint need lots in to supplement it - 10kg bag of rice helps, about 10p per meal, lots of cheap tomatoe puré, timned tomatoes and stock cubes , about 30p per meal batch, salt , pepper, and maybe 10 different spices max - some are expensive like saffron, black cardamom pods but there’s also loads of very cheap ones like cumin powder , paprika , pre made garam masala,, herbs like basil, parsley, coriander anyone with a window can grow them . Oil can be expensive if you like really food stuff but again you can buy cheap

I disagree , the mango, banana and avocado is fine, the potted herbs are all good. I know about graded meat and it’s mostly presentation not quality , meat is reared and butchered to the sane standards. Salt and sugar mostly affects food I wouldn’t buy anyway

Please send me a copy of the shopping list that you think you could do thst with. "

Eugh! Really ? Are you seriously interested ?

It’s not difficult , tens of thousands of immigrants feed large on less than min wage and no benefits to top it up , go to your local Asian African or eastern European supermarket and look at the types of things that people on very low incomes with families buy. If you’re really stuck and serious I’ll help you out but I don’t think you are.

Lidl is ok & has most things... But not all the major brands sadly. Otherwise I would do a major shop.

It lacks the brands I like. Have to go to Asda for that.

I do like their shop layout though.

I much prefer Morrison as I like their fresh meat bred and deli counter and if you look there can be much cheap on the counter than Lidl or Aldi.

They are one of the cheapest for a reason.

Hint; You aren't paying for quality.

C

I disagree , the mango, banana and avocado is fine, the potted herbs are all good. I know about graded meat and it’s mostly presentation not quality , meat is reared and butchered to the sane standards. Salt and sugar mostly affects food I wouldn’t buy anyway "

You couldn't be more wrong.

The fruit and veg is passable but merely okay as it goes off quickly. Potted herbs aren't my forte but their actual spices are low quality (so are most supermarkets in fairness). The meat isn't good enough for Tesco and Tesco are low quality as well due to hormones and added nasties.

Salt and sugar come in many forms but good salt is good for in moderation.

We are a family of four who shop at Aldi. We spend £10 a week just on fruit and veg so there’s no chance of our total food shop being £15 a week. I wish it was.

Mr KC budgeted £10 a week to Fred himself while at uni. In 2004. Shopping at Kwik Save. No way anyone can feed anyone on £10 a week nowadays and eat anything like healthily. Mr KCs diet at uni mainly consisted of cheap Weetabix, cheap beans and sausages that appeared to be made from scraps of cardboard. It was NOT healthy!

I think it might be possible to feed a family if four on a very small budget but week after week it would be soul destroying. There wouldn't be a lot of variety and it would become very boring

"The checkout operators are Olympic level fast too

They are far too quick..

We used both Aldi and Lidl some 38 years ago when we in Germany, it took them ages to follow us back home..

"

No, they are supposed to be quick as it helps keep the staff cost down.

You are meant to just dump your stuff back in the trolly, pay and move away to the packing shelves to then pack it properly.

Helps the queue go quicker, and as soon as a queue is gone, the staff go back to the shop floor. This means less staff are needed, which is how they keep prices low.

Lidl on the other hand seem really slow, and don't open extra tills as they can't afford the staff.

My local lidl has a divider down the packing area. So that 1 person can still be packing and the other person can still be served and do their packing.

"This is undeliverable it’s literally 1/2 or 2/3 the price of Sainsburys or Morrisons on most things.

If you assume that you buy one of each of the items listed (incl. 1kg of bananas), you've already spent £5.10. You have less than a fiver left to feed your family of 4 for a week, and so far, you have two pots of herbs, a kilo of bananas, one mango, 1 jar of peanut butter, one cucumber and a packet of smoked mackerel. This doesn't sound like there's going to be much substance to breakfast, lunch and tea for four people for seven days.

Not that I'm trying to dig OP out of this fine hole, there are some interesting videos on YouTube by a guy called Atomic Shrimp, whereby he eats for a week on a very fixed budget with a few adaptations here and there to represent reality.

It's well thought out, interesting and creative how he gets around the self imposed corners he paints himself into. All the while without pandering or patronising anyone's situation.

Worth a look if anyone is interested.

I’ve been shopping at Aldi for years. The prices are actually around 20% more (for many products) than they were at the start of the year. I definitely can’t feed the kids and I for £10 - £15 per week - but then we eat a lot of meat, chicken and fish though - which is where a large percentage of the cost lies.

Even shopping at Aldi out total grocery bill is over £100 per week - but we do eat a largely healthy diet - and that costs more than value pizza etc wherever you shop.

Meat is very expensive yes , fish even more so. I eat a lot of red lentils to get protein, the Laila brand , I think 1.89 for 2kg and lasts 2-3 months.

I also cut down meat by 50% a few years ago , I know two vegan power lifters , there’s a lot of cowspiracy about how much meat you actually need to stay healthy and the negative effects of grain fed animals pumped full of anti biotics helps keep my shopping bill significantly lower than most people

Oh definitely agree, this stuff has worked wonders in my garden, i've put some in small containers in my planters and tubs, and the slugs and snails flock to it like magnets, get pissed on it and die happy! It stops the "slimy little shits"* destroying all my plants and flowers, excellent stuff Aldi!

Please send me a copy of the shopping list that you think you could do thst with.

Eugh!

You made the statement. Back it up. "

Rice, Lentils, tinned tomatoes, tomato purée,,wholemeal pasta , stock cubes, onions, aubergine, courgettes,, carrots, celery, frozen spinach capsules, chillis, garlic, porridge, banana, oranges, couple of chickens, milk, eggs, flour, brown sugar, oil. You will need some basic skills in cooking , growing herbs , picking wild fruit in season etc and buy certain items in bulk - you won’t gain much weight but will get all your nutrients and enough energy to stay healthy

Their cereals are as good as the named brands. Our cat likes their cat food more than Whiskers or Felix.

Just buy less of each , £15 worth and make it last. Humans are surprisingly resilient , you don’t need to be constantly eating.

10-15 quid a week for 4 seriously??"

Yeah, thought that myself.

It is much cheaper, but with a 14yr old boy who is basically a waste disposal bin I'd only be spending 15 quid a week if I locked my fridge and cupboard.

You don't do this though do you? You don't spend £15 a week on that limited variety and amount of food and make it last for a family of four. You just happened to go to Aldi once. You have a good income and don't need to budget for food. Do you even have any kids at home?

I never said I did I said I could, I never said you could. You’re just being pedantic (and a little bit defeatist)

But you've demonstrated that's patently false then blame someone else for being defeatist? Right....

I've tried it a few times and been really disappointed. Thought I was the only one who thinks it's a bit shit.
