Oven cooking

When using the oven to cook food do you wait for the oven to reach the set temp before using it or do you just bung the food in straight away?

Before we moved, didn't have to wait (good oven) the oven we have now is pants and we need a new one, have to wait at least 15 mins for it to warm up!

Got a new Rangemaster when we rebuilt the kitchen, no need to wait really, but when doing cakes or fancy stuff, I usually give it a 5 minute head start.

Depends entirely on what I'm cooking. If it's just to heat something up, and for things like casseroles, baked potatoes etc I'd just turn it on, bang 'em in and make a judgement call as to when they are done enough.

However, if I'm baking (cakes/biscuits, pastry) I turn the oven to the correct heat before I even start to mix the ingredients, and then it gets at least 15 mins (sometimes much longer) to get up to the proper temperature. Once the item(s) is in the oven the door stays shut until it's almost has the cooking time according to the recipe - the exception being large rich fruit cakes which get a quarter turn after 2 hours, and then a quarter turn ever hour until cooked.

usually bung it in, unless making small cakes or cookies, then I let it warm up.

I'm not one for fussing too much about exact temperatures and I rarely time stuff either

I always heat the oven first for certain things ... sponges, yorkshire puddings etc... but otherwise it just gets thrown in a cold oven and left to fend for itself. X

Is it me or....naa just me thinking about sexual connotations here surely.X

As with all meats, some need a bit of warming up first before you bung it in. Others you can just go for it and turn it off when done.
