Probably really off topic for this site, but im curious how hard is it to get GP appointments in different parts of the UK, though England mainly.

here, you MUST call them at 08:00AM and are given an appointment for that day only if you are lucky enough to get through before all the appointments are given out.

so, can you book in advance anywhere else in the country, or is it same day only everywhere else too?

This is in regards general GP appointments, not long term/ongoing appointments.

Many thanks

Like you can phone up at 8am but your in a cue for god knows how long.

General appointments can be 8 weeks plus.

Same here, ring at 8.00 for morning or 12.00 for afternoon. Then they call you back to assess the situation and then give you an appointment if they think you need one. They only book advanced appointments if your condition warrants repeat visits.

Ring in the morning, they only do emergency appointments that day, you get a call back the next day from a doctor.

Yup. Used to be able to get one on the day if I rang up the moment they opened their phone lines up.

Now if I call, I'm lucky if I get one within 2 weeks.

Funny thing is, I'm a DN and I see patients for my own GP, called them up and said i can't see work or see any patients until I get some ab/x for my chest infection. They said just wear two masks until your appt

Sure, okay. Continue working with a chest infection and no ab/x and potentially patients at risk. Your patients no less. Well done GP ,

My GP surgery only takes e-consults via their website. Takes about 40 minutes to complete the very repetitive questionnaire and then they claim they will call you back within 48 hours - at a time that suits them. This generally tends to be when I'm in a meeting at work or in the shower, and if you can't get to the phone they don't leave a message and only try once more before you have to start the prices all over again if you can't pick up the second time. Once I was in Tesco when the call came and I had to disclose details of my UTI and the fact I was peeing blood to all the folks round about who were picking out their grapes and cherries on the fruit aisle.

Friggin joke!!!

Same as you so I don't bother I call 111 and they get me an appointment ASAP either phone video or face to face. Sometimes it's within minutes it's just a messed up system but your GP will reserve appointments for 111 to use.

thanks for the feedback.

I did wonder if it was country wide and it seems it is.

This is because I used to work for an sexual health clinic, and I remember clearly around a decade ago, they stopped giving out appointments in advance for the SOLE reason to massage the waiting times.

in the past, people might have to wait several days or even weeks for an appointment, now as all appointments were walk in, no one was waiting more than 2-3 hours. pure data manipulation. it was one of the sexual health nurses that told me this by accident!

so I wondered could this be behind the way GP's are run these days compared to 10+ years ago, and possibly it might be.

If I cant get an appointment when I ring the GP cause they're all out, I'm technically not waiting for one because I only count if an appointment is actually given to me.

Ring up in the morning and can usually get an appointment based on risk the same day if not it’s a couple of days wait.

I have insurance as well that allows me a 24hr GP over the phone or online but never used it. Guessing if things change For the worst I would.

Mine it's online or by phone. The online system opens at 7am and closes by 8:30 - 9am due to demand. If you ring it's 8am and you're immediately in a queue of 20+.

Thing is you can often drive to the centre and walk in, with very few people waiting or queuing, despite being on hold 10mins earlier.

I tried to book a few times across a couple of weeks and just gave up.. every Dr and nurse's (50 or so) calender said not in office for the whole month - time slots were not even loaded.

Seems to be a common theme - down here it's call at 8:30 to join the queue - if lucky you get through before the slots are gone..

Ring at 8 am and join the queue of 50+ others all doing the same thing.

Gave up in the end over the last couple of years and went private with online apps, and have had ones online, usually within the hour, and up to 10-11pm at night too.

I suppose it opens up another slot and opportunity for a non-private patient, so there's that.

Well, this these days if you want to inform the receptionist all about your symptoms so they can then diagnosis ya

Last phone call for me I had to ask for an sti screening prior a coil fitting. The receptionist actually tutted I then pointed out I couldn't get a coil fitted without a screening? She seemed a lot less hostile regarding my clearly 'unknown sexual health status' after

Appointment lines open at 8am to book an appointment for that day but if you need an emergency one they try to fit you in if you've called later in the day as for Thursday you're able to book an appointment for the following week

I made enquiries regarding the appointments the receptionist said because appointments get fully booked when folk want an appointment the day they call for another day so I said then why do you do it only on Thursday as that doesn't make sense either she couldn't explain and said she's only the receptionist

I have to ring about 8am, by the time you get through after being 19th in the queue, I'm told they have no appointments for the next 14 days. I ask to be seen on the 15th day and they don't book that far ahead, please phone back tomorrow!!!. I phoned daily and was eventually seen on the Friday 19 days after my first request to see a GP.

It's dreadful. The idea of being seen the same day is utterly impossible here.

Oh and you're able to book an appointment online so chances of getting an appointment by the time you get connected to the call most likely fully booked as appointments online can be done any time even after closing hours who had this brain wave

Going by replies being mostly from South of the border.

I actually feel quite lucky now. As long as I call before 9am I generally have the option to see a doctor at my surgery or a nurse practitioner at a local clinic in my village on day of call. Advanced appointments are a totally different story tho, these have to be booked weeks in advance.

Does the area you live in have housing developments going on? I bet it does!

Most GP practices are trying to cope with workloads way beyond your imagination and there are less of them to see you! Try using My GP to log your ailment or another app. It’s not going to get any better I can assure you. It very much depends on your area and the number of GPS available.

Appreciate what you have now because it won’t be long before you are having to pay for medical services!

I have to say ours isn't bad at the moment actually.

We are normally able to be seen in an emergency within 24 hours, And routine appointments depending on whether it's with a specialist at the surgery or not within a week. They have made lots of changes at our surgery since covid but I have to say They have been good including employing a lot of specialists. It is a large surgery but not a Polyclinic yet it has Specialist nurses, A physiotherapist and pharmacist plus a sexual health nurse now.

The only issue although not for me or my husband but there are no male GPS in our surgery at the moment. This has caused some upset in the local community which I can understand.

I don't think the pain to see a GP will ever happen as they would have to completely change the structure of the nhs as it is free at the point of access. I do think however surgeries may start charging people who persistently miss appointments.

"Appointment lines open at 8am to book an appointment for that day but if you need an emergency one they try to fit you in if you've called later in the day as for Thursday you're able to book an appointment for the following week

I made enquiries regarding the appointments the receptionist said because appointments get fully booked when folk want an appointment the day they call for another day so I said then why do you do it only on Thursday as that doesn't make sense either she couldn't explain and said she's only the receptionist

Oh and you're able to book an appointment online so chances of getting an appointment by the time you get connected to the call most likely fully booked as appointments online can be done any time even after closing hours who had this brain wave

On a very separate note... I'd like to chat if you are willing

Sure I'll check my diary (joking) sure though any time your available my inbox is open

Ha! Not to me (we got off to a very quick bad/huffy start on my account)... . Did we I can't recall as I remember we got on really well via chat so I'm puzzled as your not in my block list and wouldn't have any reason to do so

Oof?! Well? I don't think you're on my block list at all? Sooo, not sure really? But yes, would love to take the convo off the umm school yard forum so to speak

I want to buy a magic phone that you can at least get a ringtone before about 9 am to listen to repeated messages about "We are experiencing an unprecedented number of calls.....

I know they are doing their best, but nevertheless the Pandemic is over now and I wanna see ma G.P. not have to go to the Walk in Centre, even though it's closer than ma Doctor's

Very hard to get to see a GP here too. After a long phone queue, you'll likely be offered a callback from a nurse or pharmacist. Most GPs are now part-timers. The entire NHS is shambolic.

"Probably really off topic for this site, but im curious how hard is it to get GP appointments in different parts of the UK, though England mainly.

here, you MUST call them at 08:00AM and are given an appointment for that day only if you are lucky enough to get through before all the appointments are given out.

so, can you book in advance anywhere else in the country, or is it same day only everywhere else too?

This is in regards general GP appointments, not long term/ongoing appointments.

Many thanks "

Same here, call up at 8am then get a telephone appointment for the same day, I don't understand why GP's aren't seeing people face to face yet

Saying that I have a long term health condition and my GP surgery is great for monitoring, recently sent me for my 3 yearly echocardiogram, got bloods today which I have done every 3 months and a medication review later on in the month which happens yearly and an overall health check which again happens yearly, I really can't complain about my GP surgery, they are there and accessible when I need them and when I don't

Normally our GP surgery isn’t so bad, one of the advantages of being a small rural community.

Last time I tried to get an appointment it was like getting blood out of a stone, then later that week found out they were ridiculously short staffed after one of the GP was arrested and under investigation for sexual misconduct.

"Does the area you live in have housing developments going on? I bet it does!

Most GP practices are trying to cope with workloads way beyond your imagination and there are less of them to see you! Try using My GP to log your ailment or another app. It’s not going to get any better I can assure you. It very much depends on your area and the number of GPS available.

Appreciate what you have now because it won’t be long before you are having to pay for medical services! "

No housing developments but its facefuck page says it's backlogged due to the response for covid jabs (over 60's? ) and is busy preparing for the over 50's intake.

4th round of jabs... and not even the largest age group

I need an appointment for a recurring problem. I can’t ring repeatedly at 8:30am because I’m driving at that time. They told me to do an E-consultation and they’d get back to me. Unfortunately the website doesn’t work

They were supposed to give me a referral to a specialist last time I was there but for some reason haven’t done it and I’m still forced to go through this ridiculous system when they could easily just give me the referral.

I ring at 8 for appointment get through eventually and all the appointments are gone so told to ring again next day unless it’s a emergency then ring 999 .

It’s no wonder a lot of serious issues are not being picked up early enough.

"Say goodbye to the NHS. Best get a private plan. "

I use private now it’s expensive but health is my number 1 priority.

I get exactly who I need the same day, usually within 2 hours if just a phone call , any kind of doctor or specialist , any drugs I request same day , never any questions asked, or treatment within a few days. It also covers all optical, dental , massages , alternative therapies and anything major that comes up as well as all pre existing, and is a global policy so no need for travel medical . It costs me about £8K a year used to be double that but now the kids are all adults they can make their own choices, I could not afford until my 40s

The vast majority of people can't afford that kind of money for private health, especially if they are a bit older and have pre-existing conditions so their reality is quite different. Of course if you can afford it, that's great and good luck to you but for most is just not possible.

True, but here's the thing, we're all paying for it anyway - it's a fallacy that it's 'free'. But because it's government-run, the NHS is bloated, inefficient and poor value-for-money.

I agree but it's not possible to disentangle that money and use it to go elsewhere hence my expectation is, improve the service or give me my money back which will still not buy me the private health care according to the figures given as it will work out at under 3k - might be a little more currently

I think at my GP you have to pop up your tent in queue outside roughly around 3 days before you expected to get ill if you want any chance of an appointment.

My GP is reasonable good, bitbwas pissed yesterday. Rang up to get stronger analgesia for kidney stones as what has been prescribed isn't working to be told we have no appointments and to try again tomorrow

At least I was only number 20 in the que and still waiting for a call back.

For non urgent issues, I find Dr Livi really good, the gp on line. My surgery offers this service and it's great,

It's the same for us. But trying to get hold of them is impossible at 8am.

I filled in a e-consolt form (I need to be seen by a doctor) to have an email back saying they will do a phone appointment in 3 weeks time! Absolutely useless. I get their busy, but 3 weeks to not even be seen!!

My surgery is a huge combined one, with a heap of doctors and nurses working there.

As long as you aren't fussy which particular clinician you see you can normally get an appointment within a couple of days.

If it's particularly busy then the appointment might be a phone consult, but last time I had a phone consult the minute I started discussing the issue the doctor I was talking to made me a face to face appointment for the next day.

Where time is an issue is with any referrals. When I first got my contraceptive implant it was put in at my GP's surgery. Last time I needed it replaced the service had moved to a woefully underfunded sexual health clinic and I was on a waiting list for a VERY long time.

When I was struggling with my mental health a few years back it took 11 months from my GP referral for the outsourced mental health team to get me an appointment, and that was being treated as a high priority.

It's no wonder A&E is so overwhelmed. I'm sure if people Gould see there GP's in a timely manor, less people would go to hospital as a last resort.

When I tried for an appointment byesterday and could not get one I was told to use out of hours.

It's a poor use of resources
