A certain brand of family restaurant is giving away 5 free kids meals a day per restaurant.

At 220 restaurants that works out at over 5 n half grands worth of free food across the country, per day.

People are up in arms that it isn't enough.

As someone who has had to use food banks in the past I think it's a brilliant idea. No, not everyone will get food, far from it, to do that it would send the company out of business in a week! Yet still, people are claiming it's unfair.

Over to you, what's your take on it?

I think no matter what people/companies do it will never be enough. Feeding 5000 people? Why aren't you feeding 5001? I know people who have been similar to you OP (using foodbanks) and these services are invaluable.

This company's gesture may be a drop in the ocean of the bigger picture but at least it's a start. If other companies, (who could afford to do similar) followed the example then collectively it adds up.

However, in short, I think it's great what they're doing and fair play to them

I find that some people are very quick to criticise the amount that people/companies give when they perceive them to be wealthy rather than appreciate the action.

It's a step in the right direction and just think if more similar food outlets started to do the same, maybe they would all follow and before long the amount of free meals a day going to someone who needs it will be massive.

The cynic in me thinks it's gesturing that they are good. I hope they aren't the kind of company that pays minimum wage so their own staff would need this kind of help to feed their children.

I agree it's not enough to feed ALL the hungry children, but I think they're definitely doing what they can!

The question that should be being asked is, how on earth have we found ourselves in a situation where people are in need of donated food, it's become accepted as the norm and the donors are being criticised for not doing enough?

It's takeaway. The parents have to phone in to claim food, come and collect it at lunchtime in a takeaway bag, same as packaging as paid for takeaways.

Companies should give back to the degree they take resources and money out of an area. Profits need to be much much lower to enable this, many companies have more money available than national governments, so they can solve the biggest problems facing us. Everyone has a choice to work for and give your skills and time to the right types of companies that are doing this already

Going by your figures that works out to over £2million worth of food.

It's £2million more than most organisations would 'give'. If they can afford the gesture and if it's sustainable without detriment then they should be applauded.

I do agree with Frida that I'm hoping this company is as good to it's employees, however.

That's actually better than I had envisaged. Though my worry would be for the poor staff who could potentially have to deal with upset parent's.

I'm just amazed how we in the UK have come to this.

Yes it is.

My dad and I were talking about his grandmother who lost 6 children, four of them in two days in 1917. She told him that she didn't have much food and sometimes when she gave them dinner was ashamed to give it to them. Here we are 100 years later...

How has it come to this in this day and age I'll never know.

I think anyone whether it be a business or individual should help if they can and nobody should be criticised for that.

Morrisons cafe are doing £1 kids meals with every adult meal if anyone is struggling during the summer holidays.

I think a few other supermarkets are doing similar deals too.

Apart from the fact that it's so sad that people find themselves in this situation, anything anyone does to provide help can only be a good thing however small that might be. So many people find themselves in siluch hard times that can't put food on the table for themselves and their families. Just awful

I totally agree and hopefully this will be the start of a butterfly effect (although my cynical brain begs to differ). It only takes a small ripple to start a wave.

Personally, I feel like it's a great gesture. They don't have to do anything at all but they've chosen to give something back. The good publicity from it will probably only up their sales and boost sales anyway.

Being one of the families who need the assistance but miss out would be hugely disappointing. I can understand why a parent might verbally lash out and criticise the scheme when they're worrying about their own kids possibly going hungry that day. I don't suppose it's those people who are complaining in this case though, is it Peach?

I think it's a great idea and I hope other companies who can afford it will look to it as an inspiration to do something similar.

I don't know exact details as far as that goes. If not I can almost guarantee they'll be claimed by those who don't need them but want them.

Good on them I say, it's always nice to see companies being generous and it's a shame some people feel the need to complain.

Some coffee shops have a scheme where we can buy a drink and tidbit in advance for someone who would like to claim it. If restaurants could offer that or an app developed where we can choose participating eateries for direct donation towards meals, it would be good too. Did what I've said make any sense?
