"No, not talking about the spare ones we sometimes acquire over the festive season. I am talking about proper winter tyres as I had mine fitted today as I always do end of Nov til March. Anybody else in the habit of doing so or do you carry on with the normal tyres? " I assume they are the hardest grade of winter tyre, otherwise they'll wear out like crazy. There are three grades, depending on the road temperature. Fit wet weather tyres myself, and had them put on about four weeks ago. My MPV current feels like it is on rails!..

" hi, good question, I used to change the rear wheels on my rear wheel drive car for a set of wheels fitted with snow tyres ready for the winter months. But that was when I lived up in the hills of north wales. Not as many hills where I live now so dont bother changing them anymore. The winters havent been that bad the last few years. Not much snow on the ground. It all depends on what car youve got and the terrain where you live.

I've never found 'normal' road tyres to be a problem.

"If I was travelling to these countries during winter then it would be a nobrainer deff buy them and chains....in fact some of these countries have it as law " Think it's a requirement in Austria and Switzerland. In France it seems to be more normal to carry snow chains and pull in at the lay-by's marked 'Obligatoire' with the tyre sign above. Germany it's compulsory too, and the date on which they have to be on your car varies depending on area and it's usual snowfall. Last couple of winters here, the parasites - sorry, insurance companies - actually tried to say you would invalidate your policy if you fitted winter or snow tyres as it would be a 'non-secification item'. The fact that you would be making your car safer, thus reducing the likelihood of an accident, seemed to have passed them by..... tossers! Grrrrrrrrrrr!

"It only makes your car safer in snow and ice. In all other circumstances, the braking distance is greater than summer tyres and the handling is worse." I have changed mine for years now and I did not find the handling was any worse, in fact I was able to get up hills where other cars did not.

As I do not drive now my galaxy as a set of snow socks and defender as a set of chains which as never been fitted as a landrover goes pretty much everywhere.

You changed the rear tyres for winter and left the ones that steer on summer tyres? Why would you do that? The tyres that turn are the ones you want to have traction through the snow. Read Auto express 31st October, never mix always swap all 4 plus spare if you carry one. Just think about it? What's the point in having drive traction if you can't steer?

I left the front tyres as they were as they had really good tread, so managed to steer ok through the snow. The tyres I had on the rear were mud and snow tyres with a good block tread which I purchased from demon tweeks. The car I had at the time was a rear wheel drive sierra, and we all know how rubbish these were in the snow! But the snow tyres did help by giving that little more traction!
