Man travels the first half the journey at 12 mph. The second part is travelled at 4 mph - but this takes 3 times as long - therefore you can average out the speeds i.e.

(12+4+4+4)/4 = 6

12 divided by 4 gives average goes 3 half the journey expressed as a fraction is 1/2 , therefore average speed is 3x2

6 mph

Obviously a tourist driving in the Lake District if doing 12 mph - it's sooooo annoying being stuck behind them on our twisty fecking roads

Why did you divide 12 by 4?

"12 divided by 4 gives average goes 3 half the journey expressed as a fraction is 1/2 , therefore average speed is 3x2

6 mph

Why did you divide 12 by 4?"

If half the journey is done at 12 mph and the other half at 4mph then the total journey is 4 parts long. 1 at 12mph and 3 at 4mph (to make it equal to the first half i.e. 12mph) therefore divide by 12 by 4 to get the average.

Basically the same way as I did it. But you should always show your working out.
