So my outdoorsy cat is a bit of a part time hunter. This happened February 2021
Anything similar from your cats? No nasty comments please - no cats, mouse or human were hurt in the making of the following….
So here’s a funny story.. Melody came home with a baby mouse today - 1/1/21... still alive - just - I wasn’t sure it would make it, or die from shock, so I put it in my humane mouse trap with something soft to sit on, and some bird seed so it had something to eat if it recovered. Popped it into the wardrobe nice and quiet. A while later I went to see which way it had gone, to find it was looking decidedly better, and left it again.
At about 9.30, I thought I might give it some cheese. Bad mistake. In an attempt to hide from me, it went up one of the folds of the kitchen towel, so me being a complete twat, thought, open the trap and open up the towel so it doesn’t get stuck..... the mouse by this time is very much alive, turns round and makes a bid for freedom, launching itself at.. pretty much my face, lands on my top and disappears down it.... where the hell did it go? In order to take my top off, i first had to take my jacket of which is dumped on the floor and kicked so it fills up the space under the wardrobe, as I take my top off the mouse falls out and lands in my jacket, I pick it up, then remember the trap is not ready to have it back in, mouse who i will name Feisty, starts biting me, squeezes through my ‘soft’ grip and legs it across the floor to the chest of draws..... there ensues nearly two hours of shifting things around, waiting on the floor of the room, on Feisty to come out so he can be recaught.... not happening, I have to call in the services of She Who Caught It In The First Place, immediately getting in the room, we both hear some rustling, it is on top of the trolley where the cat litter lives, I try again to capture it, Melody climbs up and we both manage to lose it, it just disappeared into thin air..... actually about 15 mins later I see it’s nose and it had shot up a handy towel.... so clearing that pile to get to the towel, I’m too late and it’s gone elsewhere..
Back onto the floor, Melody is then taunted by Feisty who has now decided to take up residence behind the tumble drier and Melody is pacing back and forth until Feisty makes a dangerous mistake and is caught.... brought out.... and let go again. Melody realising her mistake, jumps in to recapture, then lets it go again.... meanwhile I can block the escape route it favoured behind the tumble dryer.
Realising Fiesty has few options left, he now decides to turn ninja mouse and tries to run up the leg of the trolley unfortunately he got stuck, The space was too small for Melody to get into, so all she could do was stay there just in case it got itself unstuck. With me on the floor once again (not to mention wheezing as 16 years of dust is floating about) I shimmy (ha! Who am I kidding) I get the trap in place, manage to get hold of Feisty’s tail (sorry pal) pull the trolley out to release him, and pop him back in the trap ?? bet he was fizzing when he found himself back in it again!
Feisty is now running free in the gardens of Wardieburn once more, hopefully gone home to tell his mum a similar story of the time the mouse got away.
Melody is still looking for it.
(Roxy was also brought in as back up but she wanted nothing to do with it and was annoyed I’d disturbed her sleep pattern)
