People urged to eat with mouths open to enjoy food more....

An Oxford University expert is encouraging people to go against table manners by snacking with their mouths open to enhance the flavour of the meal.

Charles Spence, a Professor of Experimental Psychology at the university, explained that compounds that give food flavour reach the back of the nose better when chewing open-mouthed.

He said: "We've been doing it all wrong.

"Parents instill manners in their children, extolling the virtues of politely chewing with our mouths closed.

"However chewing open-mouthed may actually help to release more of the volatile organic compounds, contributing to our sense of smell and the overall perception."

Professor Spence added that diners should ditch cutlery and eat with their hands to appreciate the taste more.

He said: "Our sense of touch is also vital in our perception of food on the palate.

"Feeling the smooth, organic texture of the skin of an apple in our hand before biting into it whole is likely to contribute to a heightened appreciation of the juicy, sweet, crunch of that first bite."

An interesting concept wonder how many will try when dining out.....

I'd rather they didn't, the sound of food loudly being chewed makes my stomach turn a bit.

"I'd rather they didn't, the sound of food loudly being chewed makes my stomach turn a bit. "

That's a very restrained reaction to lip smacking sloppy noises. Personally I get a bit stabby.

I really hope people ignore this barbaric advice!

I have an acquaintance who I cannot stand to be around when he's eating. He's a lovely guy, who I really like but his ability to show me every morsel of food in his mouth make me want to throat punch him.

I'm going with the general consensus here, I don't want to see your masticated chips churning around in your manky gob while I'm trying to eat.

Stabby. That makes me think of that perfect gif to be honest. I'm trying to acknowledge people have different ways of eating and be less .

I once made a slurping noise with a rouge strand of spaghetti and she beat me with a teaspoon. I now have to sit in nextdoors shed to eat my dinner.

A sauce covered spaghetti strand?

You're lucky you're not six feet under the patio.

Shame.

Shame.

Shame.

Shame.

With a bell.

I was spared having to walk the streets naked.

She is harsh but also compassionate.

If I ask a woman out to dinner, and she eats like she is at a trough, she's history before she even became news. As I happen to enjoy formal dinner dances etc, and enjoy the company of a quality lady friend alongside me, I hope that I never have a dinner date with someone following this advice.

The government shouldn’t be funding research into such nonsense.

The government?! Mate, the government barely even fund public services, they are NOT funding research.

Most research funding these days comes from private firms or charities, and they're most definitely not just throwing around wads of cash willy-nilly. Winning a funding bid is like Battle Royale.

Have worked this out for myself many moons ago. Of course not in polite company, smacking chops makes it taste better.
