Koh Lanta

I’m finally doing it, got everything sorted for me to move to Thailand, well to Koh Lanta, a small Thai island around an hour’s speedboat ride away from Phuket in November

For the past 15 years it’s been my intention to spend my “retirement” in Thailand, with it being this that prompted me into moving from motor trade sales management and learning website design in my late 40’s, and now my times come, I'm flying over there the second week in August and spending a month on the island where I’ll be finalising the construction of my air conditioned bungalow on the beautiful Klong Nin Beach that's only a couple of hundred meters from an old friend’s bar, then returning to the UK mid September before going back to live on Koh Lanta for good in November.

The Thai’s are funny, (or sensible, depending on your viewpoint), when it comes to Farangs, (as they call us), buying property over there, basically, we can’t buy property outright, but we can have a 30 year lease, and then only when 51% of an apartment block is Thai owned, the Thai’s doing this to stop wealthy Farangs moving in and buying up all their cheap properties as investments like the super rich Arabs and Russians have done in London and many of our major cities, but I’ve really been lucky and got a 30 year lease on around 1/3 acre of land with beach frontage for only ?45,000 a year, (around £85 a month), that’s currently got a derelict pizza parlour on it that I’m having converted into a 2 bed air conditioned bungalow finished to a high standard with a hot tub on decking out front that’s got a sea view for under £5,000, I just can’t wait to get out there, with it helping big style that I’ve recently secured a Remote Senior Web Developers post with one of the biggest web design agencies in Washington DC where my laptop is my office, wherever I am, so I can do my work sitting on a sun lounger on the beach, a glass of Sang Som whisky, (a rum really that costs less than £3.00 a litre), and lemonade in one hand and a cigarette in the other, what more could anybody want?

With a bit of luck, I've another good 10 years in front of me, possibly 20 if I stick with women over 40

I've 4 daughters, (my youngest 28), and 10 grandchildren, my intention being to come back to the UK and visit them for a couple of months each summer.

There all settled and doing well though, so as far as I'm concerned, it's time for a little me time

I'm not looking forward to the journey there, with me flying from Edinburgh to Warsaw first thing in the morning, a 6 hour stopover in Warsaw, then Warsaw to Delhi, a 2 hour stop over in Delhi, then on to Bangkok where I have an overnight stay, then next morning Bangkok to Krabi at around 2.10pm Tuesday afternoon where I'm being met by my old friend who's then going to take me on a speedboat ride to Koh Lanta

Not going to be the best of journeys, but I can't wait to get there and have one of the local bars special mushroom drinks they serve out there

Well, after 3 nightmare days of travelling I finally got to the isle of Koh Lanta last Tuesday afternoon, and apart from the mosquito bites I'm loving it

Loving it so much that I've decided I'm not coming back, with me having taken a 10 year lease on a plot of land with a lovely bungalow on it that needs a new roof for 30,000 Baht a year, (around £62 a month), but I've been given the first year rent free if I put a new roof on it, (that will cost me around 50,000 Baht, around £1,000), that's already been arranged with a local builder, so from now on I'm a resident of Koh Lanta

Farang ! That phrase bought back some memories, along with “special” coffee,kickboxing competitions in bars, full moon parties and much needed Buddhist retreats after the parties !

I did 9 months when I was younger but mostly on Ko Chang running a bar and then up north in a Lahu village teaching English. I know some teachers who retired there in the village , they keep to the 91 day rule so don’t pay tax on pensions / savings but do come back for free operations.

Just a word of warning, land registry transactions are not like the uk. There is a blockchain / ledger you can use though , Google it it’s essential when transacting land, property, businesses, assets etc in Asia, Africa & LATAM.

Thanks, with me being more than familiar with how things work in this part of the world me having spent around 5 of the past 25 years out here and speaking the language well, everything with the land and bungalow is totally legit.

In July, the Interior Ministry said that it will resurrect a measure to allow foreigners to own one rai of land (about 0.16 hectares) for residence if they also invest B40 million (about £1 million) in Thailand.

Friend married a Thai girl decades ago and they live UK but plan to buy a plot out there, have a place built and retire.

Even with her being Thai there are scammers everywhere and who actually owns the land is a tangled web.

Well, after just over 5 weeks here living on Koh Lanta, here’s an update…

I didn’t end up going for the house that needed a new roof, instead going for a nice little traditional Thai house that’s behind my friend’s bar here that’s already had a new roof and been re-plastered for only 2,000 Thai Baht, (£47.60), a month, my only other costs being water and electricity that will cost me around 600 Baht, (£15), a month each as my friend has no problem me using the high speed, (100 Mb/s), internet he has for his bar.

My day usually starts around 8am when I get up, have a shower, the a ride on to the local market less than ½ a mile away where I’ll pick up some beautiful rice soup, (a Thai version of porridge flavoured with ginger and herbs), and a piece of wok fried chicken for my breakfast that costs me only 40 Baht, (95p), before catching up on my e-mails and doing a couple of hours work for the US web design agency I work for while sat in the sun on my porch drinking fresh orange juice and having a smoke

By then, it’s normally getting close to noon when the tide is in, so I normally take my friends 2 dogs, (Benson the young pup seems to have adopted me), to the beach and have a swim before going into Otto’s bar where I’ll do another hour or so of work online having a few bottles of ice cold Chang lager and sometimes get myself something to eat there too, yesterday me having a beautiful half rack of beef ribs, salad and chips that only cost me £5.00. Other days I’ll get my evening meal again from the market where you can get a great stir friend chicken sweet and sour and egg friend rice, (that will feed 2), for 120 Baht, (less than £3).

A bottle of Chang larger is just over £1.00 and you can get a bottle of Sang Som, (Thai whiskey that’s really a rum), for around £6 in the local 7/11, (that’s actually open 24 hours a day.

No sign of a swinging scene here yet, (come on FAB, open a Thai section), but it’s the closed season at the moment, come the end of November when the tourists arrive in their droves I’ve been advised there is plenty sexy fun around

I can’t post any photo’s on here, but if anybody is interested I’ve put a few photo’s, (and videos), up on a page of a Business Directory website I’m building for the island, the page being on the .org version of koh-lanta followed by /my-new-koh-lanta-life-in-photos/, with me having password protected the page as the contents is really nothing to do with the site, the password I’ve set being FabFun, (caps sensitive), if you want to have a look at my photo’s of the island

7 month update from Koh Lanta

Well, I’ve been living on the island now for 7 months and still loving it, especially as the season is now in full swing and there’s a beach party every night somewhere within a 10 minute walking distance from my house

Several people have messaged me to ask what the swinging scene is like over here, and the best answer I can give is that I’ve found it’s not really needed, with so far me having had sexy flings with an attractive 36 years old Russian woman, (we shared a visa trip to Penang, Malaysia), a beautiful 40 year old voice over artist who I’m having an ongoing open relationship with, then a sexy 52 year old Canadian nurse for 10 days before moving on to her stunning 46 year old nymphomaniac friend when she left, (some of you may have seen her on video in chat tied to her hotel room bed a few times), who almost killed me after 11 days and nights of getting hardly any sleep due to her demands, and me currently spending “quality time”

with a gorgeous 32 year old Austrian porn actress who’s got a girlfriend arriving on the 18th to record a porno with, us spending most of yesterday skinny dipping and having fun around and in the pool of the amazing private villa she’s rented to shoot the flick in

I’m 65 years old FFS, talk about punching above my weight

Thai women?

Unlike a lot of Thai tourist areas, there are very few “Girlie” bars on Koh Lanta, but I’ve got quite a lot of Thai female friends, although I’ve not yet had fun with one, with them all finding it hilarious the way I’ve been with a different western woman every few weeks

As for the swinging scene here, I’ve not had any messages from any members here on holiday in the area, nor positive results from the few I’ve messaged after finding them close on Who’s Near, so, so far it’s Koh Lanta tourists 5 : FAB 0

Basically, I’m still loving it on Koh Lanta
