What's appropriate?

Tin town

I was intrigued by yesterday's "topless in Tesco" thread and the fact some people were fine with it and some people were not fine with it.

There's another today about meeting the "in laws" parents and the phrasing.. "of course I know how to behave appropriately, my parents etc etc".

Which got me to thinking...

Do we have a shared view of what is appropriate? Where does that come from? Does it change over time? If we have different views... How much of an issue might it be?

So, appropriate.... Any thoughts?

"Do we have a shared view of what is appropriate? "

No.

A turd rolled in glitter is still a turd. Too many focus on the glitter.

There is no shared view of appropriate but I think knowing my audience dictates what I think is appropriate behaviour for any given circumstance. Being yourself or true to yourself doesn't mean showing all aspects of your personality to every at all times.

Too many think everyone needs to see the turd.

But like you said, it's good to be true to yourself.

Of course what is considered appropriate changes over time, and everyone holds different opinions and values...just look at the massive changes that each generation brings about... the question is, are these changes progressive and beneficial for humanity and the world it lives in...

I said being true to yourself doesn't mean showing all aspects of your personality all the time. Sometimes you just need to show the glitter.

Not changing the way you come across/behave to satisfy other people. E.g. continuing to speak in your local accent rather than trying to put on a "Queen's English" accent, just because you work in a corporate environment. It makes zero difference to intelligence and ability to do a job if you speak in broad Lancashire or not.

The way you get raised I think plays a huge part in it for me.

I'm 41 now and I still wouldn't back chat,be rude too or act inappropriately around my parents or family.

They aren't strict at all but none of us ever crossed the line with them.

"What does "being true to yourself" actually mean? "

What does it mean to you?

For me - I try as best I can to live in line with my values and ethical beliefs. Not always successfully...that's where I choose my battles as wisely as I can in order to be able to live with a relatively clear conscience and as little feeling of guilt as possible.

To me? It's a non expression. Just one of those banal phrases that gets trotted out. For me what is appropriate is usually the things I learned from my parents mostly around being mindful of what I'm doing and respecting the situation, culture and environment. Mostly. I tend to be averse to conflict or controversy.

I understand.

Unfortunately sometimes conflict and controversy cannot be avoided in an ever changing world. I'm not one for conflict either but I do fight for what I think is right, without physical force.

For me it means not pretending. That doesn't mean as I said that I have to show every aspect of myself to everyone

A lot of banal phrases are shorthand for something that the person using them has thought about though. I understand why you would say what you do, I feel the same about the phrase 'my truth'

I see it as behaving in a way you're happy to stand by and motivated by what you feel to be right. Not doing or saying something because others have told you to or expect it of you.

Quite the opposite to banal in fact.
