The smell of dettol whips me straight back into childhood - any cuts and scrapes got a wipe with diluted dettol, a capful was always stuck in Grandma's tin bath in front of the fire (yeah I know, I'm old enough to have had a grandparent in a 2up2down with an outside privy and no bath)...didn't know it was a phenolic compound though

I have not checked if the active ingredient in Dettol is definitely a phenolic compound, however, based on the distinctive smell alone I would say I am 95% correct.

Did you ever have cuts and minor injuries treated with Iodine? That's what they used in my family and we hated it... Mind you it made us better people... errr I think!

Nope, only use I can remember for iodine is that I was told that iodine tablets were given out after the Windscale fire in the 50's - supposed to protect the thyroid - other childhood remembrances are being covered with calamine lotion when I had chickenpox and having mouth ulcers painted with gentian violet
