Britain's tourette's mystery

Currently Watching Scarlett Moffatt's investigative documentary on C4+1 about Tourette syndrome.

100% an issue that we need to be more accepting and aware of.

Although quite interesting and informative. Not sure how I feel about it. Claiming that it's now a predominantly a female issue due to lockdown.

Anyone else watching this and have an opinion?

Not watching it but have seen previous documentaries on the subject, many of which have been pure exploitative trash TV.

Hopefully this one is different.

I haven't watched it but I recorded it.

My niece has severe verbal and physical Tourette's that started just after lockdown. She did have a major trauma not long before and we are assuming that that is what triggered it but we are not sure. The specialist who is Helping her said that she has seen more teenage girls than ever before and they don't know why.

Totally agree. Most exploit the syndrome for entertainment value.

So far this seems in good taste. To an extent. Regarding the struggles of the syndrome anyway.

Not in agreement with some of the claims at all. Tourette's is 100% not circumstantial in my opinion. As they are claiming.

I just wanted to make people aware how serious this condition can be for many.

Tourette's Can take many forms and vary in severity.

For some people the verbal tics can be funny when you hear them However they can be very frustrating for the person experiencing them As they can't always get their point across or be taken seriously.

It can also be physically dangerous, My sister had to have her house adapted.

She had to have Lagging put on the Bannister rail as my niece fractured her wrist after having a physical tic walking down the stairs and wacked her hand so hard against the Bannister rail. The downstairs toilet had to have the sink removed as she had a tic whilst on the toilet and smacked her head on the sink and needed stitches. She cannot be left alone for very long and cannot cook or use a kettle without close supervision. My niece had to drop out of college and will not be going to University for the faceable future, She has been threatened with violence because of her Verbal tics and even had someone demanding she was removed from a holiday camp restaurant but thankfully the staff told the complainer in no uncertain terms if they had a problem they need to leave. Not everyone with terrorists will experience the same however I just wanted to point out this can be a life changing condition and debilitating.

Very sorry to hear this. Kids in school can be horrible wee bast#@ds as you say. This is why education is so important. I hope she stays strong and doesn't let it get to her.

When was she diagnosed? Is it hereditary?

Unfortunately I have found adults can be far crueller.

100% agree although verbal tick’s are only a small part of the syndrome they are through education the most recognised. Usually people with vocal tick’s recognise that there tick’s are inappropriate and appreciate the laughter rather than people being offended. Hopefully we can have the same response to all tick’s through time.

I don't think this C4 documentary helped in the end. It basically claimed it had a cause and a cure.

Absolute bullshit.

There is no cure for Tourette's but it can be treated and managed like lots of conditions. It's not about people being offended it's about people thinking it's funny and often it's not funny. It's exceptionally frustrating for the person in more cases than it isn't. My niece has no other neurological conditions and this came on suddenly.

I do agree it has no cure I was echoing what I made out from the C4 documentary. I in no way agree with this opinion. As u say it can be managed through medication. But to what detriment to those on those meds. It's heartbreaking the effect those meds have on them.

My humble opinion by the way x

Again it's like any medication it will suit some and not others and for some it can be life changing.

Sometimes the side effects can be horrible but worth it to the person if it eases their symptoms.

Cannot disagree with you there. The individual case is the most important. I just feel that the meds generally make people lose their personality. This is completely circumstantial to each individual tho. X

they don’t do scans to specifically diagnose Tourette’s she did have a scan to check she wasn’t having seizures though which she wasn’t.

Diagnosing Tourette's syndrome

There's no single test for Tourette's syndrome. Tests and scans, such as an MRI scan, may be used to rule out other conditions. You can be diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome if you've had several tics for at least a year. From the nhs website

King's Crustacean

To me, the documentary was not about Tourette's as much as it was about the rise of 'tourette's' and tics in females especially and the effect of social media on this phenomenon during and since lockdown..... The documentary attempted, to a degree, to differentiate between someone with Tourette's and others who may be exhibiting certain acquired behaviours.

The Village, Wales

I've seen a few documentaries on this subject over the years, I remember one in 2007 and I think 2014. Both times I felt they were at least a year behind the curve. I feel the same now. The difference now is, I've noticed it in myself...saying things randomly. I don't want to repeat what came out of my mouth the other day as I walked across the kitchen - it just fell out of my mouth. I have developed verbal tics, a kind of oral twitch. Sometimes I just go "yeah yeah" for no reason or "I don't know" or "oh bite me toots". I do it in my sleep too, or so I'm told. Yeah this is on the rise all right but I personally don't believe it's attributable soley to the lockdowns.
