Why is it that schools have been closed yet workplaces are left open. I am currently in an office with huge glass windows and no air conditioning.

Mime is being very relaxed about expectations, as is my partners and more than 1 friend.

Unfortunately there are no HSE guidelines on working in a maximum temperature si good employers will be supportive and shit ones far less so.

It's a lot more nuanced than that.

The reality is employers don't want to see a relaxation of productivity for any reason.

It's not about giving people the day off, it's about treating employees well which yours clearly aren't. Your company value their profit/productivity over your health. And that's the fault of capitalism

Because we don't have any law regarding high temperatures in the work-place.

School heads are using common sense, because children are involved and they get hotter than adults, because Science/Biology.

Also, adults have the option of pulling a sicky, where children have to rely on their parents.

Unfortunately, some people must work in this heat, so others don't suffer.

I wasn't expecting my Lucozade delivery to turn up today but it did, so I gave the driver 2 cold drinks from the fridge, which he appreciated very much.

My employer has closed certain parts of the business and relaxed the uniform rules.

After these temperatures I would expect some sort of max temperature legislation to come in.

You don't have to be communist just because you're not a capitalist.

If companies were willing to operate on the basis of making less (note LESS not none) profit then employee wages could rise, there'd be better working conditions and more re-investment, better services, cheaper goods etc.

The drive for maximum profit is what leads to people having to work in extreme heat instead of (like schools) those in non-essential jobs could be given some time off.

It's perfectly possible to have a balance in theory where companies still make profits but that money ends up back in the pockets of employees and customers rather than shareholders.

Not the Tory way, obviously.....but easily achievable if companies wanted to do so. Everyone would benefit if businesses worked for the benefit of society, employees and the communities in which they sit instead of focussing on making their CEO's, MD's and shareholders as rich as possible.

I know it's crazy there is a minimum temp but no max! I've mainly worked in kitchens my working life! And thought this! X

The issue with max temp regulation is all the exemptions that would be required, steel, production, oil refinery, kitchen work. The basis of the health and safety at work act is its written to cover all.

There is guidance from HSE about high temperatures and any business that ignored the guidance would be in trouble. If in doubt read it.

Whilst it may not be law it’s there to protect employees and the employer needs to satisfy that guidance has been followed if problems occurred

Extra breaks provision of drinks and risk assessments that need to be carried out.

But ultimately you seem to be defending capitalism (on the binary notion the only other option is communism) while bemoaning the impact capitalism is having on your working day.

Where I work the drivers are allowed shorts but not us shopfloor workers admittedly we have air con but it's not that great we still get very hot running round with the picking trolly! I'm gonna ask for a pair next shift x

On another thread , I posted about automation. In the food industry there are very high temperatures in some food production. How many would complain if bread manufactures said no bread for X amount of days .Cannot have employees working. Plus it is not easy to shut down / start up production lines that run 24/7.

Honestly If I were asked "do you want bread if it means torturing the workers with potentially deadly heat who make it?"

I would say no.. I don't need bread that bad.

(yes I know I am only addressing half of your post here, just sticking to the working in the heat side)

I'm in education. Working from home mainly because I have COVID but Mr KC is also WFH because there are no trains. We've been working in our downstairs living areas which are well above 30°C, in education. It's a very busy time of year for us.

It's false news that all education is just shutting down.
