What job do you think people are overpaid for?

Ok I will start:

Footballer. There is no way no one should be paid what is someone’s annual salary in a week for kick a bag full of air about on a pitch.

Member of parliament. I don’t like my job role, I resign only to get another job role in the same place. And I make the rules. So I laugh every day. Hahaha.

How about you?

Footballers are paid what they are worth to their clubs.

I have played with players 50 times better than me and they never got past semi professional level. Frightening how good a top league professional is, and if you are the very best of the top league then you have a skill beyond what someone who loves the sport can even comprehend. 1% of nine year olds who are signed to an professional club academy make it as a professional, at any level. It is elite.

Members of parliament are not paid enough, it attrscts liars, cheats and con men trying to make more money. Pay them all £1m a year so they don't have to worry about what they can do after politics or how much they can make from backhanders, underhand dealing or voting a particular way. They are secure for life and can make a difference in the lives of others.

That is exactly what the Singapore government says...and, indeed, they pay themselves over £1 million.

Bridlington.

Isn't it all about market forces? People pay a lot of money in the area of football for example so the players can demand big bucks.

Where market forces do not apply like some other bonuses voted for and paid to the big bugs in industry should raise questions for share holders!

Always going to be wronguns but I would try and enforce the law a bit more.

Any MPs in my make believe country would not be allowed to own any shares in any companies either.

Any wrong doing that forces you to resign as you position within the cabinet or as an MP results in a compulsory jail sentence and repayment due of all salaries paid to them while in public office.

It's a very different place with a social philosophy that is unworkable in Europe anymore. They have, essentially, a one-party system that is disguised as a democracy. The things the government does to retain power would have them overthrown by the people here within days of taking office. It is, essentially, an autocratic democracy. The people don't have a say, despite appearances and a post like this would have me on their watchlist.

It isn't authoritarian in the sense Communism was in restricting the movements of its people but the people aren't prone to speaking out against their government.

Newry Down

In reality no one job or occupation is overpaid; but many do not get a living wage because of their powerlessness to negotiate for better remuneration and working conditions.

The power of unionised labour has been broken for a long time and many people are on a so-called minimum wage, which has to be supplemented by a range of subsidies such as Tax Credit, etc.

Footballers used to have no power decades ago, and a maximum wage per week of £20 was the norm.

That changed when soccer clubs became businesses.

To be in a well paid job have a rare or highly valued skill that is in demand.

To be badly paid, have a widely available skill, that is commonplace.

The most highly paid person in the UK is a young woman who works for a family gambling business; she is paid many hundreds of millions every year and is also a owner.

She knows how to milk people who want to bet!

Most of the lower level staff who work for her are probably on minimum rates of pay with Tac Credit topups to survive.

She is powerful; her employees are powerless!

John Arne Riise if I remember correctly?

Footballers accountants have been very clever in the past, with players taking just a basic wage from the club (say 10k a month which is PAYE and NI is paid against) with the rest paid to the players company as 'image rights'. the player can then take directors loans from the company on generous terms that would often see the loan being written off.

Up to a point. Another way of looking at MPs pay is that we don’t pay enough to attract anyone who can’t already afford to be an MP.

I prefer the pay them all a flat £75k and make them live in a publicly owned accommodation block. No expenses apart from work travel, and no flipping houses to make a killing at taxpayers expense okaying the London property market.

So dont tell me they're working in the heat. They did a decent job but if I was in a rush I would have less patience. My mate is a plumber and has only ever done installation jobs. Obviously there's more money and less contact with faeces. When there's a fault he simply suggests that they call out an emergency plumber and not him because he left it working. You'll find a lot of plumbers are like that. Let's go back to who you think is getting paid to work hard for 8 to 10 hours and put up with shit who deserves more pay and respect. It's not the skillset, it's the position. A tradesman can ignore the public. Someone on FOH who encounters the public cannot. I never said everyone should be paid the same. I said we should have a universal basic income so no-one has to live without comfort.

I also said that I think someone being paid more than 20x the average as too much.

Having been a driver for over 30 years, I'd have to disagree with you there.

How many other professional have to start work at 1,2 or 3 in the morning and forsake their social lives to do so.

Then of course there's the MASSIVE responsibility for the lives of the hundreds of passengers on any one train at a time.

Kids throwing bricks at your windscreen, people killing themselves using the train your driving and the trauma that such an event causes.

Whilst your driving your car at 10mph in thick fog, we're still driving at speeds of in excess of 125mph and still stopping at red signals and stations (most of the time, lol).

Now think again my friend.

All over the place

"Footballers are paid what they are worth to their clubs.

Exactly this, it's also a short career that is one bad tackle awya from being over

Footballers are definitely overpaid, have little respect for each other or the officials.

Rugby players are on the other hand are so underpayed.

Our military personnel and their families. Whilst everyone is talking about politicians, footballers, train drivers etc. These people put their lives on the line, live and deliver under some of the worst environments whilst everyone else is protected comfortable and safe due to their and most commonly their families sacrifices. The difference between these brave, moral , heroic people is, they are not doing it for pay or status. But for purpose, honour and belief in our nationality, culture and communities. If only all the professions mentioned above had these characteristics. We wouldn’t even be having this conversation.

Agreed . And don't forget our frontline NHS staff.

My late wife was a nursing support worker and got paid "peanuts".

Then there's our Firemen and Police, the list can grow & grow. Far too many "professions" being under valued & underpaid.

On a slightly different note looks like public sector works are going to turn down a 5 % pay rise.

I myself got a 4% and was pleased with it.

The problem is if every working person gets a 9 % pay rise no one will be better off.

Public sector workers pay isn't the highest but they get a job for life and a very good pension scheme they seem to forget this

Yorkshire but travel

This might be controversial….:

Minimum wage….I think it’s an awful concept, rewarding low skilled non-technical labour whilst holding back skilled technical salaries

(Runs for cover)….!

I was in the military, simply put it never was well paid as they could always recruit and replace the workforce, same with police fire or nhs

Alongside the absolute job stability, full sick pay, pretty competitive pension you also got other perks

Compared to private sector work I’m in now, public sector might not be top level pay but the whole package is very very good

"Anything above approx 20 times the UK national average wage.

But I am a "dirty leftist" who believes in universal basic income.

Universal basic income would be amazing

I don’t agree

Some people work a lot harder than others

For example a builder last week working outside in the heat and sun vs front of house receptionist in an air conditioned office

Do you seriously think these 2 very different careers are worth the same pay rate ??

Yes, let me reassure you that the builder would have factored that delay into the final bill.i love that phrase estimated. Always over never under.

The FOH receptionist will still be sorting an organisational shambles because staff have lost the ability to communicate post COVID.

Your delusional

If there is still a shambles a year after covid then they are shit at the job

Foh receptionist job role is to greet and inform (don’t confuse with pa or secutary!)

So basically sitting on ass being nice making calls

A builder digging a hole with a shovel or building a 1000 brick wall

You think these 2 people should earn the same basic income "

That's communism not UBI.

If we got 5% every year we'd be laughing. Heck if we got 3% every year we'd be happy. The highest I've ever had since graduating has been 2%. Most years its been 0% or 1%. Its barely been affordable to sustain this long but this year its just too much. It isn't about just this year's percentage, it's playing catch up for all the other years we've effectively taken a paycut.

I think its 100% inevitable that we will have a universal basic income income funded by a AI tax or robot tax.

Jobs are going to dissappear within 20 years that will leave a massive percentage of the population without work.

Andrew yang in America is a big proponent of it

Absolutely. If we make a move to self driving vehicles, that would cause mass unemployment.

In fact a lot of technological advancement is held back by the need to keep jobs. Without that limit, technology could progress so much further and quicker.

I sort of agree with you. The skilled people who earn a decent salary are normally the ones who tried their hardest at school to get the O and A levels they needed to then go on to further education. A lot of professional qualifications take up a lot of time and effort over several years and chances are when they do get a job they will still be earning close to a minimum wage for a few years until after a lot of hard work, effort and unpaid overtime they will get the salary they deserve. A lot of well paid people earn that money because they do "earn" it.
